Zbrush 3.5r2 consistant crashing

Hello

I have been having some difficulties with zbrush 3.5r2. I have been crashing on a consistent basis. It seems to crash when I am changing geometry settings from say 7 subdivisions to 6 or 1 subdivisions. For instance, I am working on a file with a few subtools. One of the subtools has 7 subdivisions with a poly count at 7 to be around 9 millions polys, total for all subtools about 24 million polys. Almost every time I change geometry settings to the one subtool, zbrush crashes. Working on the file, sculpting or polypainting, causes no problems (with the exception of an occasional crash while using the stitch brush). I have also had a few occurrences of crashing while saving ztools in the last two weeks.

My memory settings are set high and my system, I believe, is more than capable to work the file:

2.4GHz core 2 quad
6 gigs of ram
windows xp64

Today I attempted to compact memory (compact now under pref-mem) within zbrush with a blank document upon a new zbrush start up and it crashed as well, multiple times.

If anyone can offer any suggestions I would be very appreciative.

Thankyou
Ben

when you say your mem settings are set to “high” what does that mean?

when saving ztools always

-save at the lowest subD
-always remove all masks
-always have all geometry visible

As to changing subD levels I always use the step up and step down buttons (D, Shift+D). In previous versions of Z I have found that using the slider with either make the system hang for a very long time, or crash Z all together.

Hope this helps to some extent.
If you keep getting the crash on the compact now button I would submit a ticket to Pixologic through the support center.

By high I meant that auto compact is set to 4096, priority set to high, multi threading, my system virtual mem is set to around 10gigs ect. The settings should be set to handle what I am throwing at it.

The key shortcut for changing density levels is working a lot better. I am amazed at the difference. Thank you for the tip.

I did submit a ticket about this. I rebuilt my computer yesterday attempting to alleviate my headache. Installed zbrush first, after all system updates, and tested the compact memory, crash… Not sure what is causing that.

Thx

The keyboard shortcut seemed to only work for a minute. Its back to crashing either way.

me too guys l was working on a reptile and it closed the window when l try other files it works perfectly but when l try to open the reptile file is closes again and again l restarted my laptop and used uniblue speed up my pc to stabilize and clean the memory but it’s still the same problem could some show how to solve it.
