So I made the switch and a ztl of Im using from a previous version is black? Any clue to the problem and solution?
Did you try re-assigning a new material to it? Maybe the material you used in your previous version isn’t in version 4.0.

go to polypaint in tool attribute and switch off the colourise button!!may help!
