Zbrush 3.1 randomly crash on save tool

Hi
Zbrush 3.1 seems to have difficulties on saving tools
Every 2/3 save the program crash, it happens without doing anything perticular.

Hope you can fix it soon cause it’s really killing the fun.

(The custom hotkey function is a blessing, I don’t need to have anymore button now, fullscreen sculpt yeaah)

Thank you.

The WORST time you could have a crash too. you’re right on my 3rd save it froze and then crashed on me (using 3.1) it’s been stable since i installed new nvidia drivers but crashing when i’m tryin to save, this is unacceptable.

Sweet, it crashed again, this time on the first save. i LOVE doing the same work over and over agian…

Ok, i’m may have found a workaround about this by doing a few things, i didn’t isolate what cause the crash but it doesn’t crash on me so far:

1-Make sure you don’t push the maxpolypermesh higher than zbrush advices you to use.
2-Deactivate Transparency in EVERY slider on customise interface
3- I do “things” (i don’t know if they are needed at all but like i say it doesn’t crash so i will not complain): first when i want to save i cancel the first save, then (and that seems important), i make sure to click on the save button, do not push enter on your keyboard when you selected the file you want to overwrite (i like to think zbrush doesn’t like to be told doing thing fast)

4-i f you are “lucky” as me, you will not crash.

That’s the way I do it, some part may sound completely useless but anyway it works.

I would be grateful if pixologic could adress this bug cause it’s REAL STRESS ^^

I am running into this problem too.

This seams pretty big. Is it only happening to a few people?

I have not done any customization to 3.1 at all. I am just trying to save my zsphere tool (a character base I made from scratch) as I progress.

This is very annoying because I loose work everytime it crashes during a save. I will try the work around but BeatKitano suggested but it seems very strange in order to get such basic functionality.

Do not use the hotkey CTRL+S this will crash when you save.
Always go to the Tool palette and use its “save as” function.
Alternatively you can use Svengali’s cool Quicksave plugin which will also save incrementally.

So it’s a hotkey issue? I have been using both ctrl+s and ctrl+t (save tool) on various occassions. Sometimes it crashes, sometimes it doesn’t.

It seems to crash after I have done a lot of work.

I will try your suggestions. Thanks.

I’ve lost like 3 hours of work today because ZBrush crashes on save!!! I’m just about to pull my hairs off, it just drives me crazy!!! It’s a big shame a great potential tool like this one crashes when it should be really working (as it did before). I don’t have any portions of the mesh hidden, nothing is masked and it crashes no matter how I save the tool (via a shortcut or via the save tool button).

What are your system specs? What are your settings in Preferences>Mem? How many polys does the model have?

The sort of situation that you describe most commonly comes from either trying to make ZBrush do more than your system is capable of, or from having preferences settings that handicap ZBrush’s ability to efficiently utilize your system’s resources.

I run ZBrush 3.1 on Pentium 4 2.8, 2 GB RAM, 320 GB HDD, NVidia 6800 GT, WinXP SP 2.
I mention it never crashed on save in ZBrush 3.0. It crashes even when I have fewer polygons, so I don’t think it’s related to the complexity of the scene. However, compact mem was initially set to 256, then I’ve set it to 512. Still crashed. Now I’ve just set it to 1024, I really hopes that’ll make a change, allthough I’m pretty pessimistic about that.
Sorry for the double post, but it’s pretty frustrating losing hours of work when you’re on tight deadlines. Crashing on save is the weirdest and the oddest moment a program should crash.

I didn’t really think about it until I had about 45 minutues into a sweet model. I’ve been going through the new tutorials and it hadnt much bothered me but since I started a model I could scream.

Im running a Intel Core 2 Quad @ 2.66GHz. with a NVIDIA 8800 GTX with 2.75 gigs of ram.

Any Help would be very good,

zb is borked. use Svengali’s plugin and set it to a hotkey and you should be ok : http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=49080

Gratzi

Dear ZBrush Developers,

What about releasing an update/patch for ZBrush because this is a BIG BUG and cant stay as a “known issue” thing.

Same problem here: random crashes on save. Here’s how I can reproduce the crash (about 10% of the time):

with model open, press ctrl+S
select “save tool”
select “save alpha with tool”
select old .ztl file to overwrite with the new one
Watch as Zbrush immediately closes with a generic “Zbrush has to close” error.

Zbrush guys: PLEASE fix this in an update. This bug costs a lot of time in production.

I got the crash pretty random , luckely i save every 5 to 10 min, what everyone should do by the way.

But ill got with the script or just go to the tool menu to save if that helps it, but this needs to be fixed fast.

Weird do, its such an obvious bug.

I think ive found a solution to this problem, make sure all you subtools are at there lowest sub level when you save, ive started doing this and its not crased yet.

It works for me to NOT USE THE SHORTCUT.
Instead go with you mouse to the tool palete and click on Save Tool.
That way it went fine for me.

Dont use Strg + S - go with mouse/tablet to “save tool”

Saving at the lowest subD does not seem to help on my machine. I do always use the ctrl+S shortcut… I suppose I could use the menu pulldown instead, but it’s still a nasty time-sucking bug that needs to be addressed.

Hey Zbrush devs: could you chime in on the status of this crash bug?

I had this crash 3 times today. Extremely annoying.
This time I just waited and indeed zbrush recovered after 10 minutes freeze.
At least thanks for the tip with the saving-button. I will see if this helps. :frowning:
