Zbrush 2020 Interface

Hi, I just upgraded to 2020 and am having the exact same issues as I did when R7 was released. The interface looks so bad that it’s almost blurry. The fonts are incredibly hard on the eyes. I’ve stayed with 4R6 ever since because it’s impossible for me to use. I posted this when 7 came out on these very boards and everyone seemed to say “it looks fine.” It does not look fine.

Is there a way to get it to be the resolution and look of older versions? Why is the updated version looking like it was made 20 years ago? I’m not normally the type to complain about free upgrades to things I love, but this is ridiculous. Like I actually cannot use it. I know that may sound overdramatic, but I cannot. Any help would be great. Does it just need to be optimized? I know we can change the colors and bold the fonts, but that doesn’t help whatsoever.

Hi Josh

This depends on the monitor resolution you are running Zbrush at, and the stored program preferences that return to default every time you upgrade Zbrush.

The minimum recommended screen resolution for zbrush is 1920 x 1080. Likewise, if you are running at the higher end of the screen resolution spectrum, many UI interfaces will be tiny, and you will have to adjust some elements.

In Zbrush, the easiest way to do this is with the Preferences > Interface > UI > Button Size function. Increase this until you find a size that is comfortable for viewing, though it will change the number of interface items that can appear on the screen at once. You will have to restart the program to see the changes, and don’t forget to Store Config (Preferences > Config) after making any changes in the preferences that you want to keep at startup.

Once you have your preferences stored, it should not be necessary to adjust this again until you update Zbrush again.

Also,

Have you changed your Windows DPI Scaling. Normally, it should be set at 100%

If you are still not satisfied, you should submit a ticket to Support as they are the most qualified to troubleshoot problems.

Please show a screen shot of your ENTIRE interface. You’ve cut off the top bar, which includes info that we need in order to be able to help accurately. That code that you see in the top bar is not a security risk – it contains no account information. It’s just your computer’s digital thumbprint, which can’t be reverse engineered to determine anything at all about your account or your computer system. So there is no reason to remove the top bar from a screen shot.

Thanks!

Thanks for the response. However, I’m well aware of Zbrush’s button size option and that’s not what I’m questioning here. I’ve attached a screenshot of the two versions next to eachother for reference. I’m referencing the fonts and resolution of 2020, not the size of buttons and icons. It’s pixelated and painful to read. Like actually physically impairing. Was it redesigned to look this way or is it simply not optimized. I’m using an iMac that more than fits the system requirements.

Here are the tow versions together for reference. P3 is easy to read, 2020 is not. It’s pixelated and painful to try and read. Was the software redesigned to look this way or is it a resolution error? If this is its intended look, I recommend open sourcing it.

I swear Im not trying to be difficult, but the older version screenshot looks much, much worse to me. The font used is much blockier and pixelated. I think I see some little deformities in some of the characters in the 2020 UI that are bothering you, but they dont bother me as much as the p3 interface which is less readable across the board.

I think there are simply subjective issues at work here.

Adjust your button size for viewing comfort. This will also change the appearance of the fonts, subject to your OS DPI scaling settings, as some fonts don’t scale well at every size. Larger buttons will result in more pixels being delivered to the text, which should improve its appearance.

This is a video of someone using 2020. It does not look like mine. I’ve tried exhaustingly changing button sizes. That does nothing to fix this issue except put this pixelated text on a bigger button. Clearly there must be something wrong here. Changing Mac’s resolution does nothing. Why am I paying for something I physically cannot see to use?

I would suggest creating a ticket and taking the issue to Support. Whatever general advice I have to give I’ve already exhausted, and I’ve yet to see anything that jumps out at me as especially odd, other than you are running your UI at a scale that would be too small for me at your screen resolution. I’m viewing this on a 1080p monitor currently, so I may simply not be able to see the issues you’re referring to.

Did you solve this problem?
I’m also an iMac user and I think ZBrush is not using AnitiAliasing in mac.
But, if you increase the resolution of the iMac and increase the ui size of ZBrush at the same time, you will see better results.
It’s ridiculous anyway to make iMac’s resolution to 5k for better font result.
