Zb4 on Macbook pro

Hello guys, I notice that my macbook pro runs hotter with zbrush 4 than zbrush 3, like within 1 or 2 minutes inside zbrush 4 the fans will start to run and the temp go straight to 70 - 80 celcius range. Just wondering if anyone experience the same thing and not just me. I hate it when my computer runs hot like that lol makes me feel like I am literally burning it.

I attempt to load in a model I made with Zbrush 3.2, to edit it and in a few minutes the fans start up and the software crashes…

what? Thats unfortunate! Sounds like actually system error to me. Mine doesn’t crash, it just gets really hot, but I did some research and macbook pro’s normal temp range from 40-90C so I guess mine’s not that bad when running zbrush, and in other posts I found they said it gets hot because zbrush uses more cpu than gpu, unlike Maya, which my computer stays pretty cool when running it.

I don’t think its my system files that at fault here but programming bugs. I was really looking forward to using version 4 but with the instability, it’s going to make that hard to do. My point is, why can’t new updates be bug checked before release. There does seem to be a rush to get the latest version before making it function, as we would need it to for everyone.

The products Pixelogic make are revolutionary and I like being one of their customers.

ZBrush 4 definitely uses more system resources than 3.2 did, but don’t just start blaming bugs outright. Make sure you don’t have too many other programs running at the same time (itunes and skype are both fat pigs that really don’t like playing with other applications) and make sure you don’t have too many other programs running on your system bar. Also, if you have a second monitor hooked up that’s gonna tax your system a lot too. And make sure you restart your computer every few days.

I’m currently running on a 4 year old Intel macbook pro, 2 gigs ram, 2.3 gig core 2 duo, snowleopard, and have been having minimal issues with zbrush 4.

I only have Zbrush 4 loaded, no other software is running whilst this is being used. So that’s not the root cause of the instability. If you can offer any constructive solutions to the root causes, I’d be very thankful. I’ve been waiting for an upgrade like this to come along. May I also mention, I don’t have any second monitor connected to my laptop. None of the crashed mentioned in the previous versions occurred, so I can’t understand why I should experience them now in this version.

please list your machine, ram, processor, OS version, etc.

Processor - 2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory - 4GB 1067 Mhz DDR3
OS - 10.5.8 Leopard

I hope this helps.

I forgot to mention my OS, which is version 10.5.8

Thanks

Your system should be able to run it just fine, there probably is some sort of issue with your install of one or more pieces of software. I recommend backing up everything with time machine and trying to restore your system.

call apple.

do you only have the problem when you load up the old file from 3.2?

No, no issue using version 3.2. My system isn’t at fault and I hope whatever is wrong with Zbrush 4, Pixlelogic sorts it out with any updates. I also don’t know whats wrong and how to sort the root cause of the crashes.

Thanks for your assistance anyway. Maybe Pixlelogic will get back to me with an update later on.

Hi Ricaspone,

I think lucaswschmidt was asking if you only had the problem when trying to open a tool saved from ZBrush 3.2…

It sounds like your having constant crashes, so was I until I adjusted my compact memory settings as described here https://support.pixologic.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=57&nav=0,14

Seems like it’s set at 256 megs by default and until I bumped it up ZB4 was crashing with little provocation. Now it seems much better.

Hopefully this will do the trick.

Good luck,

Sam

Hi Sammer1,

It crashes when using the preview button for adaptive skin, when used with z spheres.
I know Spotlight and Light-box don’t fully work, as Pixelogic need to add some more plug-ins at a later date. I’d hoped it would be fully functional when released but sadly not. Have you had any problems with crashing like me?

Regards
Ricaspone

Yep.

My MBP was crashing a lot. I adjusted the compact memory settings, now it’s not crashing.

You have checked yours, right?

Seem like I was having the same problem on my MacPro but not really sure. I keep hearing the fan whizzing up. There’s an Software date from Apple for the graphics card. Haven’t had any problems lately.

Hi Sammer1,

I’ve checked my memory settings and increased it 1 GB less than my total memory installed in my system. Is this what you did?

Thanks for your help
Ricaspone

Hey Ricaspone,

That’s it exactly, and it made all the difference for me. Hopefully it will work for you as well.

Have fun,

Sam

Hi Sammer1,

This advice seems to have made the difference but I hope there isn’t any more issues, or I’ll have to get back to this forum or support, if I do…:+1: Thanks for your kind words.

Ricaspone

My ZB4 also crashes when i preview adaptive skin, not always but enough to
annoy the hell out of me!
