ZB4 for Mac Adaptive Skin Preview Crash

I have a McBook Pro with 4GB of RAM running under OS X 10.6.4 and using ZB 4 for the Mac. I am getting nearly constant crashes when trying to use the adaptive skin preview when working with zspheres. Even with extremely small numbers of spheres (like 4 spheres).

I have tried all of the recommended changes to various settings I was able to locate in this forum such as the compact memory settings in preferences in ZBrush and turning off access to assistive devices in the universal access setting for the Mac with no benefit.

Has anyone got any other thoughts on this matter or am I going to have to work in Windows when I want to use zspheres? Fortunately I have both a Mac License and a Windows license but haven’t even bothered to download the Windows ZB4 version since I really don’t want to use Windows unless I absolutely must.

Hi! I have the same problem here. Same Mac, but with the last osx and try all supposed solutions! Sometimes it crashes and sometimes dont! I also hope for a solution!

I am also having this problem with my MacBook Pro.

I thought I should chime in here and say that the same thing is happening to me. Sometimes it crashes (most of the time) and sometimes not. I can’t figure out what is causing this. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

(I’m running an iMac 2.8 GHz i7 with 8 GBs of RAM)

I have found a solution that works for me at least. I found that if I preview my adaptive skin mesh AS SOON AS I start sculpting with zspheres, and continue to preview my mesh on a regular basis, it never crashes.

Conversely, if I don’t preview the mesh frequently enough… if I go a while and make several changes to the zsphere sculpt without previewing the mesh, and then try to preview it, it will almost always crash.

I know nothing about computer programming, so I have no theories about why it’s working this way, but this is how it’s working for me. Try this and maybe post whether it helps you in case anyone else is having this problem too.

One thing to make sure of is that you’re not trying to use classic ZSpheres features (such as Attractor/Magnet or indented ZSpheres) with the ZSpheres II skinning algorithm. They’re not compatible. If you are trying to use those features, be sure to turn on the Tool>Adaptive Skin>Use Classic Skinning option.

Thanks Cissell,
That seems to be working for me. Good call.

I was having this same problem, but the ‘Classic Skinning’ trick worked for me. Thank you so much!
