ZB3.1 Smooth Brush Behaves Differently

Cannedmushrooms: what are you saying? You can get Smooth to work? I tried your settings, but not much better results.
And you are right: Standard Brush and Inflate brush ARE inversed!!

This isn’t right. All those most important brushes going haywire… Can more people concur? Are we missing something of is the upgrade on these points really flawed?

At the moment I REALLY need the good old smooth brush. Does anyone know how to downgrade? (I never thought I would say this; I love many of the improvements 3.1 brought, but sculpting is still the most important bit)

ya plak it works for me now
swear thats the only thing I changed

so those setting did not work for you at all?

Anyone else try?

O and another thing and this sucks
(smooth only works with Zadd for me)

so goto a smooth brush set focal shift and the curve and mouse average
then goto normal brush make some high res deformation
hold shift with zadd on and see how it smooths

Smooth works now exactly like “flatten” brush of Mudbox with a low intensity…

I love some of the improvements and fixes in this update… but man, smooth is almost the half of sculpt work! (for me at least)

i dont tried cannedmushrooms settings yet thought

Well Canned, I did all you said, but still got the same problems, as shown below.
[smootherror2.jpg](javascript:zb_insimg(‘65428’,‘smootherror2.jpg’,1,0))

It’s terrible. I have no doubt the guys at Pixologic have noticed this already and will fix it asap, 'cause Zbrush without good smooth… Having to change ten settings just to get it working isn’t according to the makers vision I feel.

In the meantime feel free to post similar experiences (so we don’t feel alone), or a big bright solution.

Ive tried the “skate ramp” curve posted by canned and seems that helps some. Lower the intensity and negative values in focal shift seems that replicates a little more the old smooth… however… still not the same. Its like they put in some of the “ignore topology” component of flatten and clay in smooth brush…

Plakkie, yes, its more obvious in lo-res meshes

well, it should smooth without digging (inverted skateramp) or bulging
(skateramp) with just the straight 45-degree curve from bottom left to
top right…especially since there’s the offset of 0 on the brush allowing
for the radial fall-off around the brush’s edges.

seems like something got borked in the push for Siggraph and a release
to us as promised.

I sure hope a small patch could be issued and not a long delay for larger
changes…

Can anyone move points at a very low level poly around the opening of a mouth or eye? with the move tool set at like 22 width?

I’ve been messing around for a while , and i’m afraid i never really got the behaviour of the old smooth brush, also the standard and inflate brush are indeed off as someone mentioned.

going back to 3.0 for the moment. There’s no real change in the update i need, so not a big deal for me.

Here is the saved Version 3.0 SmoothBrush-Curve.

Open Brush -> click on the Smoothbrush-curve to open it and load ‘SmoothCurve.ZCV’ .

Niow the most important:

Change ALT BRUSH SIZE from 1 to 2

That is the fault in 3.1

Now you should have your old Smooth-Brush back.
Try it.

Namek: I’m afraid I have to go back to 3.0 as well for a while.
But how?? I never downgraded before… is it possible on a one OS computer?

Hope Pixo will acknowledge and fix it soon.

Ähem, Plakkie, look in my post above.

There is your former smooth-brush back again.

On my system it works now just as it did before under 3.0. :+1:

Tried Rasta’s technique, but it didn’t work for me. Loaded the curve, set Alt brush size to 2, but alas, I’m still able to write my name on a model with the smooth brush… Rasta: can you check if you can write lines and curves on a high poly object in Z3.0? Maybe that was always the case… I can’t compare now.

Same , its just the same brush that cuts away at the model only 2 times as big ;p

I can almost feel Ralf working feverishly to solve all our problems… Will he save the universe?!

Are you sure ?

OK, I only tried it with the demo-head so far, but it seems to work clean for me:

Smooth_test.jpg

No cuts or flattened strokes.
It looks like it should be.

I’ll try it with some other models.

The only thing is you cannot save the settings and have to redo the procedure every time you restart 3.1.

Yeah. I’m sure! How… can you go over that model with a smaller brush size? Mine is still cutting away at it. If I set it to ZSub it can even create big elevation.

Isn’t it possible to save the brush and send it up? Maybe it will work?

Where are now those who screamed WOW, INCREDIBLE, GREAT, THANKS!

I hate Siggraph - he just make Pixologic hurry up and they injured seriously Zbrush just to show up something new :td: .

Just work on Z3.2 guys - dont anounce nothing, dont rush it - just do your work and concentrate. And pay someone to write help and/or documentation for upgrade, for crying out loud…
peace

it’s definitely better than the harsh edges left by the default, Rastaman, so
thank you for that (and probably ‘livable’ with higher res and lower intensity).

As you can see, it still could use some smoother refinement, but I think I’ll not
revert back to 3.0 just for this.

cheers.

WailingMonkey

edit miztli, I’m still right here saying “WOW, INCREDIBLE, GREAT, THANKS”,
but I got my upgrade for free and it’s supplied me with quite a few workflow
enhancements. Appreciate your ability to be snide with the majority of your
comments all the same, tho, if that’s what works for you.

Tried it again… same result…

With my smooth brush, there is definately some flattening going on. It works quite like the old layer brush.
Wailingmonkey: if I’m reading that picture right you have flattening going on as well?

ya this is crap!
Sorry to be blunt but ya going back to the older version
Wads 3.1 up and throws it in trash.
