ZB 3.12b and Os X - Strange rendering behavior

Hi guys, here’s my issue
I’m reading a book titled “Introducing ZBrush”, by Eric Keller.

There is an exercise to show renderging capabilities of ZBrush, but my zb rendering do not behave as expectd.

I have a document that show up well in preview mode, but when I change to Best mode, it does show up weird flat stuff , and not shadows ( as the attached files )

I’m using zb 3.12b on Mac Os X 10.5.7

Any ideas? thank you guys

Update to 3.2

Then provide more info about your scene. We don’t know anything about the materials, lighting or render settings that you’re using. That makes it impossible to try and troubleshoot.

Yeah you’re right, sorry.
I did the update to the 3.2, and the rendering is chaghed a bit.
I’m really a newb … I don’t know how to know what materials are in the pixols…

This document (that was in the book dvd) should be just a demonstration on the differences between the preview and the best render mode, especially for the shadows, that should be “flat” in the preview mode and “oh the ground” in the best mode. But when I hit the render button it makes this :

I hope this can help you to help me
After all it’s not so important… I’m not sure I’m going to use zbrush except for modeling… I was just wondering why this strange behavior… And, you know, maybe the solution can help me to better understand zbrush even for the purpose I would like to use it…

thank you very much !

You can find what material is used for any canvas pixol by dragging off the Material thumbnail onto the canvas. The cursor becomes a Picker. When you release the mouse, the pixol under the Picker is sampled and the Material palette will be set to match. (This works with the Color thumbnail as well, to sample color from the canvas.)

As for the rendering problem, I can’t know much without being able to check out the document myself. But it’s a safe bet that the book was not written for 3.12 or above. There have been optimizations and changes to the rendering engine, which will affect older documents.

Thank you very much aurick!
The materials in the document are fast shader for the cactus and the gorund and flat color for the background.

Ok,maybe I won’t have this kind of issue with my documents creted directly in the newer version
