Zapplink V3 problems with Gimp and PSP

First off, much gratitude for the new Zapplink and ZB 3.1, Zbrush is awesome!

However, I can’t get Zapplink3 to work with the Gimp or paint shop pro. It crashes on “drop” in zapplink. Every time the external application loads, it crashes. I have no extra plugins installed and the old zapplink works fine with Zbrush 2 and Corel paint shop pro on my system.

I’d like to install Photoshop, but it isn’t in my budget right now.

If you notice on the 2nd image I posted, the gimp software is looking for Zbrush files and folders within its own(gimp 2.2) directory.

Anyone have luck with gimp or psp?

Am I the only one out there who doesn’t have photoshop?

I think the problem might be the pathname. That “Gimp-2.0” is potentially very problematic due to the decimal in it. As a general rule, it’s very bad news to put that character into a folder name because under many circumstances Windows expects to find an extension following this character, rather than a continuing pathname.

Thanks Aurick,

I’ll try renaming that folder to see if it helps the issue. However, the app I really want to use is the Corel Paint Shop Pro X. Do you know if this app is compatible? I had no trouble with this in zapplink for ZB2. Perhaps something was wrong with my install?

I have psp and had the same problem, but solved it by going to windows control panel/quicktime icon and untick show still images option, or any other still image utility you have.good luck

In and out of psp no problem but it does’nt retreive work done in psp. will load photoshop and try(i like psp better).

tried photoshop, the exact same as last post, can’t retrieve any changes. Just won’t use it.

Hello ullach, please start a new thread, provide your system specs and detailed step by step of what you do and I will look it over to see what can be done.

Aurick, Ryan,

I have no idea why, but I was able to get it to work. All I did was uninstall and reinstall zapplink V3. When first using zapplink v3 I instead, did not choose an editor. PSP is my default PSD editor and opened without any trouble.

The only question I have now is which layer do I edit? (see attached image)

layer.JPG

great!

Edit Layer 1. Not Mask - Layer 1. Just Layer 1.

Ryan

Thank you very much, works great!

In GIMP I edit Layer 1 not the mask, save the file (I have to hit apply mask as GIMP tells me PSD files cannot handle masks). I go back to ZBrush and it tells me there is no change.Problem comes where for some reason the first time I save all layers are changed to NORMAL and everything other than layer 1 should be HARD LIGHT.
So when I save I close GIMP go back to ZB and it tells me the file is unchanged I press “return to external editor” or whatever it’s called and then change all the layers, expept layer 1, back to hard light, save again go back to ZB and WHAM!!! IT WORKS!!!

Thought I’d share this with those who want to use GIMP.

Actually I do have another question. I create a 3d model, I add a texture to that model that is blank with nothing on it. I then drop the model using zapplink, I then modify in my app the 2d layered image as normal. I have not created any new layers i just edit Layer1.

When I pick up the change back in ZBrush, is it supposed to have the work on the texture I created like as happens with projection master?

Hi,

I DID GET PSP TO WORK, YEAAAAHHHH!!

After fiddling around trying to get PSP9 to open my Zapplink psd file (-each time I got an error message that PSP could not open the file-) I remembered that when you install PSP it asks you to associate certain filetypes with it and i didn’t do that at install and discarded that option so that the default windows options for file types would stay as they were.

So as a last resort I went in PSP to: File>Preferences>File Format Associations and pushed the button “Select All” and then the “OK” button.
So now all the filetypes that were checked are going to be associated with PSP. (EDIT: including all PSD file types.)

(EDIT: Manually adding the PSD file type in Windows Explorer>Tools>Folder Options>File Types to open PSDfiles with PSP by default did not work, but changing the file associates directly within PSP9 as described above did the trick!)

Then closed PSP opened ZBrush3.1, pressed Zapplink and it opened in PSP9 just fine for the first time!!!

And after changing the layer1 and saving the file, it updated in ZBrush3.1 without a problem.

So for those who didn’t get PSP to work with Zapplink, this might be the answer.

Sorry if this option has been posted elsewhere already!

See ya, 3dommi.

I want to add that for those who use multiple 2d graphics programs this might mean that you have to change the file associations every time you want to use PSP with Zapplink or only check those file associations which are needed for Zapplink PSD files to be opened in PSP.
