ZApplink V3 and Windows Vista

Hi All,

I just downloaded and installed Zapplink V3 on my Vista machine. The installation was successfull, however there isn’t a Zapplink button under the Document menu. Any ideas why this might be happening?

Here is my configuration:Intel Core2 Quad 2.4GHz
8gb RAM
Nvidia GeForce 8800 Ultra
Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit
ZBrush 3 Installation Directory:
C:\Program Files (x86)\3D\Pixologic\ZBrush3
Thanks!

Hey Jadex, can you look in the ZStartup/Zplugs directory of your zbrush install and tell me if there is a file called ZAppLink3.zsc or anything with the name ZAppLink?

Do you have ZBrush installed in its standard location or did you install it somewhere else such as the F drive?

Best,

Ryan

I’m having the exact same problem, and have Vista as well…only 2 Gigs, tho! Anyway, I’ll follow this thread instead of posting a new one.

I checked my ZStartup folder and there is no ZApplink anywhere. I also did a search of my entire Pixologic folder, and no ZApplink in any folders.

Hey Ryan,

I checked the ZStartup/Zplugs folder, and like Slosh, nothing relating to ZApplink3 is installed there.

I have ZBrush installed here:
C:\Program Files (x86)\3D\Pixologic\ZBrush3

Thanks!

I had some vista related weirdness and this may help sort it if its a similar issue:

Make sure when you install from the Zapplink installation file that you right click and ‘run as administrator’. For some strange reason vista sometimes refuses point blank to install certain files if you dont do this. Hopefull this will work, as it is a similar problem I had when instaling 3.1 a couple of nights ago (which Ryan must hve spent hours online helping me to solve the issue… thanks mate :+1: ) The problem I had was similar in that the main exe file wasn’t installing (turns out it was due to needing to be installed as administrator. so I’m guessing it’s similar to this…)
Hope that helps.

Wayne…

Also did you browse to the ZBrush3 folder instead of using the default location given by the installer? I think you will need to do this with your set up.

Same problem with XP. ZL stuff winds up in Zplugs, no buttons, no way to start from Zplugins.

markkens,

For a successful installation the ZAppLink button will be in the Document palette.

Slosh, make sure you install ZAppLink into the same directory as ZBrush 3.1. What directory do you have ZBrush 3.1 installed in?

Thanks,

Ryan

Hello Jadek, That is not Zbrush’s default directory. Run the installer again and when asked where to install ZAppLink make sure to choose browse and select the C:\Program Files (x86)\3D\Pixologic\ZBrush3 folder. It should work like a charm from there.

Thanks,

Ryan

Hi Ryan…thanks for the quick reply. I feel like such a dork…Yes, ZBrush is installed to Pixologic\ZBrush 3…BUT, I installed mine on my D: drive, not C:

I am usually careful to notice installation paths more correctly, but I had a brainfart this time. Sorry to bug you guys for nothing. Thanks!!! Everything is fine now.

Hey Ryan,

Thanks again for the help! That was is it, just installing in the wrong path. Man…I am with Slosh, I feel like a dork. I just assumed that it found the correct path…stupid assuming.

Thanks again!

All is well…

Does Zapp link not work with 3.5?
I’ve tried installing the .exe - first of all it didn’t show in any of the folders, never showed up in the program under Documents.
So I tried making certain it was directed to the right folder, I went in manually, selected the Zbrush3 folder it was to install to - but as soon as I did that and attempted to open Zbrush I locked up and gave me an error. I had to uninstall it in order to get my program working again.

I’m quite baffled over this, certainly there’s some silly step I’ve overlooked - at least I’m hoping so.

[COLOR=White]This thread is for an out of date version of ZBrush.
It does not apply to version 3.5. I am now locking this thread for that reason.

In 3.5R3 ZAppLink is installed automatically during a default ZBrush installation. It is only not installed if you do a Custom installation and specifically remove ZAppLink from the list of plugins to be installed. You do NOT have to install it separately anymore, which is why it’s no longer in the Download Center. Any versions of ZAppLink other than the one included with 3.5 R3 are incompatible with it. You’ve actually messed up your copy of ZAppLink by installing an old version over top of the good one.

To fix it, do the following:

  1. Delete the ZAppLink ZSC file and data folder out of the ZStartup\Zplugs directory.
  2. Go to the Windows Control Panel > Remove a Program window. (The exact name varies depending on your version of Windows.)
  3. Locate ZBrush in the list and select it. A “Change” option should appear above the list. Click that.
  4. ZBrush’s installer will start. Choose the Repair option and let it complete.

This will replace the bad files that you have deleted with the good files that are in the installer. If you had told the installer not to install ZAppLink when you first installed R3 then you will need to change step 4. In that case you would need to choose Modify instead of Repair. This will let you select the missing plugins and add them to your installation.
