Zapplink in R6 not projecting onto texture when canvas is 4k or higher

Hi.

Im wanting to project a texture directly onto a 6k texture map. Iv set the canvas to 4k, use Zapplink with photo shop then enter Zbrush again. All works up to the point I click pick up, the geometry disappears off the screen, and nothing is projected? Canvas at 3k still don’t work, 2500 x 2500, it works?

Thanks, Dan.

What OS and ZBrush version are you using? I just tested and don’t have any problem with 4R6 on Windows.

Hi Marcus

Windows 64
16gb ram

Video shows whats happening. Having tested this on another model, its not happening. Iv checked the Uvs, no issue, the scale is the same, but when I press unify from the deformation tab the issue does not happen, the model just sizes up like 500 times larger?

Thanks.

Just so Marcus has more feedback… I’m on Windows Vista x86…

I just tried this on a 3000 x 3000 document and didn’t have any problems at all. I tried with Corel Photo Paint 12 and it worked OK. I also tried it with Photoshop CS2 and it worked OK. Do you have another 2D app you can try it on to see if it’s your connection to your Photoshop?

Hi Dan,

OK, that’s useful, thanks. From what you say, your model is obviously very small. This seems to be what is causing the problem (though I haven’t been able to reproduce, even when scaling a model down a lot). ZBrush does have limits of scale in other respects so I guess that you are hitting one for ZAppLink. I suggest that you use a unified version of the model for creating your textures using ZAppLink, as the scale of the model won’t affect the texture quality. You can then apply the textures to your model at its original size.

A couple of things:

  • You may find that using the Transform>Set Pivot button before dropping in ZAppLink solves the issue.
  • In your example you are using a square document for a long thin object. It probably won’t solve the issue but a dpcument with proportions that mre closely fit the shape of the model will keep ZBrush more responsive.

I’ll continue to look into this in case there’s anything that can be doen with updating ZAppLink in the future.

HTH,

Thanks for the feedback. I took another model and scaled it down to real world scale of a 5.9ft human, then the issue happened. Setting the pivot did kind of work, but left shadow like projections with the projection, as if the normal where reversed.

Reason why iv scaled it to real world scale is iv found Modo works best this way for lighting and shading setup.

Thanks for checking it out zber2, try scaling your model down to real world human units, 5.9ft, then try.

Thanks. Dan.

In Blender, I scaled a cube to 5.9 ft. square. I imported that into ZBrush on a 3000 x 3000 document and drew the cube on the canvas to fill 3/4 of the document. I used ZApplink twice and it worked as it should without any problems and updated the texture both times.

Thanks for giving it a go, I think its a scale issue and this is how I can replicate it. Get a piece of geometry from another app, and have it huge in size. Bring it into Zbrush then Goz it out or export it, then make it the size of a character to real life scale, send it back to Zbrush.

Now have your doc at 2000 x 2000, make a blank texture of 6k, then select only a small part as if it was a arm, leg and frame it to screen size, now use Zapplink.

When you resize something smaller that was big to start with, when brought back into Zbrush look in the geometry menu and look at the size, its like 0.3 or something small. Also the preview it looks tiny. Now unify it, the size go back to 2, or what ever it originally was.

Download this file, select the polygroup to be visible only, then frame that section to the screen. have a document size of at least 2k, and a blank texture map of 6k, then use Zapplink. When you go to pick it up, the object moves off screen, no projection is made, your need to frame it again to view the object.

Dan.

Document - 2000 x 2000
Texture Map - 6000 x 6000

I presume you just wanted the middle polygroup showing so that is what I did and scaled that to fit just inside the edge’s of the document. I used ZApplink to Photoshop, saved in PS and picked it back up in ZBrush. When ZApplink was done doing it’s thing, the tool shrank to about 1/3 of what it was in the document, staying in the centre, and the Texture Map did not update. It was still blank. I tried with the whole tool showing, filling the document, but it was the same thing.

At first , I thought it might be your UV Map because it showed errors when I did a ‘New From UV Check’ (as seen in image below), so I made a new UV Map using UV Master. Unfortunately, still no joy. Same thing as above.

I tried using Projection Master, but it was the exact same result.

As I said, I think you’ve hit a limitation of scale in ZBrush. The same thing happens in Projection Master, so it is not specific to ZAppLink. It may be possible to adjust the ZAppLink code to correct it but I doubt it. In the meantime your best option is to use Unify so you can create the texture map as you want, then apply that to the model at its correct scale.

Thanks. It would seem that the issue only happens if you re-scale after it got brought into zbrush, making the mesh the correct scale to start with does not seem a issue, so a warning to others who think they can down scale after bringing into zbrush. Of course down scaling also has the negative effect on the sub d sculpt level in which the details are bloated on drastically down scaled models.
