Those of you who are old and hairy enough to remember sitting around the ZAcademy fire banging our clubs on our tablets grunting “How this ZBrush-thing work? Grunt-grunt!” would remember that life was happy and we all feasted merrily on pixols, while the leader of the pack -Kurisu- would howl at the moon and teach us how to hunt while in “Edit-Mode”. On occasions the great mysterious-one called Pix-E-Later would appear out the darkness to throw a new log on the fire and disappear again. Everyone had a sneaky suspicion that this mysterious man worked for Pixologic. I myself concluded that this mystery-man swept the floors at Pixologic and would sneak a peek over the boss’s shoulder.
Hmmm, yes.
It made sense at the time.

Some may recall rumors about a great scroll, where all the wisdom of the Academy was stored. Hark! I believe I have discovered part of that scared paper! And with the help of a few friends I have been able to restore only a part of that document. I have placed it into the sacred ZPLACE, located in the halls of the Mighty Digits, where it can be shared by all those who are strong at heart, and brave enough to click on the following links…

It is believed the great Kurisu still lives in the holly caves of the SENNTIENT.COM and also the now empty plains of the ZACADEMY, where he is planning great and mysterious things with the remaining parts of the scroll. He can still be contacted by yelling very loudly, or placing gifts of appreciation at the gates of the SENNTIENT.COM . If you place your ear to the door you can hear the hammering and sawing as he rebuilds the insides of the great SENNTIENT.COM . It is rumored that these gates will one-day be reopened and Kurisu will walk amongst us once again sharing his wisdom from the great scroll and more! He has possession of the greatest part of the scroll (three-quarters) but has gifted a small portion of it for us mortals to study and learn from. Not just those amongst us now, but for those still to be turned to the Z-side, in the future!

This document contains the wisdom of those amongst us who have shared our knowledge of the technique in creating our meager cave drawings. Some tips. Some tutorials. Mostly, it is the remains of the logs that the mysterious Pix-E-lator threw into our circle. (What happened to that guy? I can tell you he has been promoted up from a floor-sweeper to a desk-job - a GOOD one!)

May the flames that this parchment bring you, ignite your way. It is up to you to benefit from its warmth and guidance. Blessed is Kurisu for letting us share this gift with his permission. Blessed are the likes of Pixelator and Southern for their gifts to the Academy. Also blessed is brother Kazbear with help with on this parchment. He was wounded battling the dragons, but we are still lucky to have him with us today for guidance and knowledge sharing.

What about a specfic forum for tutourials? I.E. all of pixolators tut’s in one forum like the FAQ forum.

Invite others to contribute and share their knowledge, skills and experience.

We will have a separate forum for tutorials soon. All tutorials will initially be posted in the ZBrush Forum and later moved into the Tutorial Forum.

We will also be adding a ZScripts Forum soon.

Hey, I just found one of my own tutorials helpfull. Weird.

What a fantastic job you have done. I just printed the PDF and it`s chock full of all thebest tips and tuts. Well done, I wondered whether this would come to fruition and it has in full technicolour glory.

Top job.

How did you make the PDF??? What software do I need? Is it done with Adobe Acobat 5 and the Distiller? I want something free that that will mahe PDF`s like yours.

Hi guys.
Just had a break in the real-world and away from the computer. I’ve got lots of catching up to do. Its good to see this got such a good reponse. Thanks for posting a reply if you downloaded it. I’ve been worried that some might think I was taking credit for everyone elses work. Please give credit to those names on the front cover.
This has been sitting on my shelf since January, waiting for Kurisu’s approval to publish it. Sorry its taken so long. I had to take out Kurisus stuff (about 60-70 pages) as Kurisu has plans of his own with it. So I’m sure it will come to fuitition sometime in the future.

Southern. I make my PDFs with Word-97’. I copy and paste the text in and place it as carefully as I can, changing fonts and correcting spelling. The pictures are a real pain. I have to copy and paste each one into the document as a none-floating bitmap, (via patse-special. This stops Word from auto scaleing it to fit the page). Then scale it and change the word-wrap via the picture control menu, and then move it around the page to where I want to place it. Then … I check the picture format (by right clicking on the picture) and check the size of it. When a 72dpi picture is placed into a word file and then rescaled, the dpi of the picture increases by how much scaling there is, so it may turn into a 300-dpi picture, which greatly increases the file-size! (thanks Kazbear for that info!!) So if I have scaled the picture 50% - I have to go into photoshop and load the original and rescale 50% in there. Then I copy and paste the picture into word as I did above and deleate the first one. The picture should be 100% in size. Then it’s just a case of changing the word wrap and moving it into the place that I put the first one.
Then its a matter of “printing” it as a PDF. I use Acrobat4 and this incorporates itself into Word when you install it. You have two different options when exporting to a PDF - Distiller or PDF Writer. You have to experiment with which gives the best quality. I must of saved this PDF about 40-50 times until I was happy. Kazber is a bit of a wizz at PDF’s and I’ve just had a sharp learning curve. There are other applications out there that convert files to PDF. Illustrator does. Freehand 9 maybe does? (not sure). I also use Corel Draw9 and it exports PDFs but not as good as Acrobat.

permission to use your work. I’m sure in a years time there may be another one. In the meantime, collect as many tutorials and information into your own file, as you can. I have a ZBrush manual printed and bound and its about 300 pages! (60% is the Pixologic PDF referance manuals).

PS. Spotted the mistake - I credited Southern for the Pixolator’s Choclate sea tut, in the bookmarks/index in the color PDF! Doh!

Great explanatition Upham.

I think the Adobe site is offering free PDF making, but its a limited offer. Worth a look though. Other than that, I have not found a service/software that will do it for free. I may be willing to offer my PDF making services if you like. If you are interested, drop me a line and let me know what you have in mind.

On the subject of using Word, if you use Heading styles, these will automatically be used as bookmarks when a PDF is created :+1: .

Also, I am working on a PDF “Application” designed to help create and format tutorials to be saved in PDF format. At this point, you have to have the full version of Acrobat for it to work properly. If you would like to demo it, drop me a line.

Hello Upham,

I too wish to thank you for your effort. Threadfast was a tremendous resource of knowledge, a great loss. I had saved many of the tuts including many of Kurisu’s (I’m not sure the man ever slept !!). Your document contains gaps I missed. It obviously was a boatload of work. Good job - thanks! :slight_smile:
