I tend to use (and love) Zbrushes alt-click subtool selection frequently, as I rack up ridiculous amounts of subtools, and it’s the only way I can efficiently navigate between them.
Even though most brushes have an alt functionality, it’s not relevant unless you’re clicking over an active tool, so you can alt click on inactive subtools to highlight them without issue.
However, when an insert brush is selected as the active brush, and you alt-click on an inactive subtool with the intention of highlighting it, it activates the insertion behavior, masking out the active item, and sometimes inserting small, extraneous geometry that can go unnoticed and cause problems later on.
It’s not a crippling issue, because you can take care to switch brushes before clicking through your subtools, but it’s definitely inelegant, and potentially problematic, especially as insertion brushes begin to play a more frequent role in a zbrush workflow. Perhaps reassigning of one of these functions could be looked at for the next release.
I don’t believe its something I can keymap, but any other tips on how to avoid this conflict are welcome.
Thanks!
