Z4 Beta Testing By: Marco Splash Plouffe

Hey people! My name’s Marc-Olivier Plouffe, I recently moved to Montréal to follow a one-year program in 3d modeling at Campus Ubisoft (Cégep de Matane). I finished last June and then I had the chance to participate in the beta testing of Zbrush 4 and work with great people and artists. Anyway, here’s a couple of models that came out of my experiments. Hope you like it!

                    Napoleonic Special Operation Unit
Every basic shapes were created using the Shadowbox, then reshaped using Clip tools, MoveElastic, Claybrush, Relax, Remesh and Project All. The deco brush was pretty useful here too! You can take a look at my Shadowbox workflow at the bottom for more info.

Congratulations for your models!
The Napoleonic Special Unit is very original and the Iron Maiden’s Eddie is very impressive for attention to details.

About the shadow box’s workflow I have to understand on field the use of RemeshAll and ProjectAll, because it’s not so clear to me: I don’t know when and for what to use them.

Anyway, thanks for sharing your suggestions on workflow, especially for using Spotlight to have basic texture.

Thanks for such an informative explanation, and thanks for bringing eddie the 'ead to life too! I’m sure the band would love to see this themselves. I’ll be revisiting this post to try and pick up on those tips you kindly gave as soon as I have ZB4 installed tonight (it’s gonna be a long day at work today, grrrr:confused:).
Brilliant work!!

Eddie model is brilliant!! Love it!!

merci de partager vos connaissances…
bien le bonjour

thanks people! de rien!
i’m currently on vacation but i’ll answer your question soon!

ok I got a minute so here’s the answer:

the idea with the remesh all is to sculpt, stretch and carve a basic shape to a point where the topo is not constant anymore (or totally destroyed) and use the remesh tool to get the same shape with a new and even topology.

for example if you were to start from a single basic cube to make the shape of a gun, you’d definitely need a remesh in the process.

talking about process, I suggest using the remesh in the first steps of your workflow since it won’t keep all the details of the original shape and you dont want to make your sculpting twice. remeshing will make a kind smoothed version of your original mesh, but at least the topo will be constant for further sculpting or texturing. in other word, once you have blocked the basic shape of an object, remesh it and make sure to remesh it to a low enough poly count (and divide the subD lvl to approx the same polyount as the original mesh) since “reconstruct lower div” doesn’t always work.

the project all is useful is many context but, when using with remesh all, it helpd you get most of your original shape back after remeshing. like i told you, after remeshing you’ll get a blobby smoothed version of you original mesh. so remesh using a lew resolution to get a low polycount, subD to a lvl with an equivalent polycount, and then project the new shape over the original mesh and you should get approx 90% of your work back but with a new, even, and with workable subD lvl mesh. then finishing the polishing and sculpting with the brushes.

i hole that helps and don’t hesite to ask questions again!

Really nice work!

wow ! he is fantastic !
I would like to know if it would be possible to have an STL
give me your price :moneybag: in MP

Hello, excellent work!
I would like to know if you sell this STL file. If so, what is the price and how can we proceed with the purchase?
