Z-Ship

Made this today using the saltapiedras technique. I was pretty inspired by his thread and will definitely explore this technique further.

Saltapiedras, gracias por los excelente tutoriales. Ellos son sinceramente increíbles. Tambien, perdona mi español. Lo entiendo perfectamente pero no lo escribo bien. Ciao  - Joel

Nice ship Mecha! Its nice seeing tech in the forum  :+1:

Wow, this is so sool!!!1
Can you please forweard saltapiedras’ tutorial link??
thanks!!

WOW! Great Space Ship. I love Sci-Fi so this is just great!

Wait, this was done in ZB…

Damn fine job!!!

If I gave stars you could have 6…

Thanks everybody!

The Saltapiedras tutorial can be found here:

It’s similar to the Lemonnado zeeble tut but you’re roughing out your shape first with zspheres. Some of the deformation is a little all over the place but I’m pretty sure with a little editing of your initial texture map, you should be able to even it out nicely. It’s a great way to get a base mesh started… this one took under 10 minutes to make.

I also wanted to say that lately it seems every time I think something would be too difficult and time consuming to model, someone finds a way to simplify it and create it in an unbelievably short amount of time using zbrush. In the past week I have had so many conventional ideas of how to approach modeling completely blown away by user tutorials and contributors on this site. I purchased zbrush about half a year ago and I am a bit embarrassed to say that I did not take the time to really learn zbrush out of simple intimidation, even after spending all that money. I have learned more in the last week following tutorials by users like Lemonnado and Saltapiedras than I have the entire time I have owned the application. The approach used by users here is incredibly empowering and I am finding myself more inspired to create with zbrush everyday. I haven’t felt this freakin stoked about an application in a very long time.

Nice rendering. How long does something like this take to model using the technique described? Fascinating results!!

Oops!! Missed the time comment in your original post.:o

DMerchen - About ten minutes to rough out a quick shape with zspheres and then apply the deformation technique. It actually took longer to render than it did to build, believe it or not.

Pilou - Thanks:)

Played around a little more with the ship design:

Simply Bad-A$$, period!

AgentSmith

So, could we see the Alpha you used to create this. I wouldn’t mind seeing the Zsphere and Alpha to get a better picture in my head how you did this. Quite fascinating and very smooth results!!

DMerchen,

The ship was built following the same process that saltapiedras outlined in his tutorial (see the link above). The only difference is that I deviated from it by choosing to create the deformations with the size function. The basic steps are as follows:

  1. Create a basic ship shape with zspheres.
  2. Go to Tool > Adaptive Skin > Density and change your density level to 7
  3. In your Texture palette, click on Texture 13 (the grayscale microchip texture) and apply it to your mesh.
  4. Go to Tool > Masking > Int and click on it to create a mask from Texture Intensity.
  5. Now go to Tool > Deformation > Size and adjust to preference.
  6. Turn off your texture and mask when you are done.

One thing I wanted to point out is that the deformations will be random so your ship will not look even. The easiest way to fix this is to align your ship from a top view and mask one half of your ship, then apply smart resymmetry to it. This will mirror your masked geometry and you can go back and use the same process to apply even more detail to your ship.

If you make anything interesting, please feel free to post in this thread. I’d love to see what other people come up with.

All,

I’m attaching a zscript I put together showing how the ship was made. I hope this helps… cheers!

So you could create your texture the same way they are making theirs with the Zeeble thread. I thought that was how you did it, so I was hoping to see your alpha/texture you created. Worth experimenting with for sure. Thanks again!!

DMerchen,

I used a default zbrush texture for the ship but Ive been vectoring my own out as well. See attached.

Nice job Spaceman!

Ha ha ha, really cool  Mecha.jpg

Thank’s just for you Mecha !
