Z brush poly limit??

I keep seeing that there is a 10 million poly limit in Z brush 2.0 yet on my computer It crashes trying to get 8 million???

I have a dual 3.2 Xeon with 4 gigs of ram which is the max for a 32 bit os so where are people getting 10 million from??
thanks

I have gotten around 6 million and thats it and I have all the settings right like max polys per mesh, any help would be appriciated

if you’re using windows only 2gigs is really available to you til 64 bit systems are out.

getting to 10million is based on what the original mesh poly count is anyway. if you are at 6 you have already peaked out the poly count for that model because to divide it again would make it somewhere in the 24 mill range.

have you optimized your zb settings? there is a link in quicklinks I think to help you do that. Also…if you are running anything else even in the background…they are eating up your ram so turn everything that is unnecessary off.

ummm well i am tired and can’t think of anything else at the moment.

hmmm yeah none of that helps any, I get all that stuff, but I should be able to take say a 2 million poly mesh and subdivide it again for an 8 million poly mesh but that doesn work it just crashes

and yeah I know about the ram limit, my point is I pretty much have the highest end 32 bit PC and If I cant get it to 10 million, my question is WHO IS!!

I just wonder why the Z brush guys claim that 10 million is the poly limit and how did they come to this conclusion, as far as I have seen 10 million polys is not achievable in Z brush 2

so if you take a 600 poly (quad) mesh It should subdivide as follows

l1 600
l2 2,400
l3 9,600
l4 38,400
l5 153,600
l6 614,400
l7 2,457,600
l8 9,830,400

but nope -

do you have ht turned on? and what did you set the max mem at? try it at 2048 and see if that does it instead of having it set at 4096 or whatever.

make sure your undo settings are low etc etc.

other than that…at 9830400…thats riding the limit pretty close but would think it should do it so am guessing you still have something running somewhere that sucking memory. oh another thing to try is adjust swapfile sizes in windows etc.

otherwise am out of ideas at the moment.

Thanks Ill definatley give all that a try!!

oh yeah…i forgot one thing

on the drive you got zb on …make sure you have probably at least 1.5 to 2g hard drive space free. any program that might have to write to disk …specially one that’s gonna be maxing out your mem is gonna need at least an equal amount of drive space to write to.

i have two drives…one i keep essential programs and os and zb on the other is for all other crap…models, programs i use less, textures, etc etc. this way i will always have 100gb free for those programs that need it.

I have 3.06mhz dual xeon with 4gb also, just installed xp pro next to my old win 2k to enjoy the extra gig for my apps with the /3gb switch in boot ini.

Though only thing noticeable was that xp pro crashed at anything beyond 6 million polys, something my win 2k did not.

After a while I realized i had third party memory manager running with old win2k, and that made the diffrence, i get to 8.5 million now. I use the freeRAM XP pro 1.4, but i bet any memory tweaker will do. Maybe this will help you too.
