I like it a lot!
I read what you wrote about vray skin mtl and I totally agree. I played a lot recently with the vray sss2 and vray skin material and it was frustrating to try to get some exact colors where i wanted. I finally discovered that it is far easier just with a basic vray material and just use the translucency. It is supposed to be more precise (and a bit slower) calculation this way. And now that I know how to use it I can’t imagine using sss2 or skin mtl again… there is also the new VrayScatterVolume in vray 3, but I haven’t really tested it yet.
There was a very good explanation about how to use the translucency on the vray form by Svetlozar Draganov from Chaosgroup: http://forums.chaosgroup.com/showthread.php?72613-How-does-VrayMTL-translucency-work/page2&highlight=translucency
here is what he says:
"Translucency - it is an older approach but it generates more accurate result than FastSSS2 and because of that it is slower.
FastSSS - this material is optimized for SSS calculations of objects with volume, it generate much faster but less accurate result than VrayMtl with Translucency.
In V-Ray 3.x there is one more addition on that subject and this is VrayScatterVolume material.
This is a unbiased method which will generate as accurate result as Translucency but it is easier to setup."
