'X' Symmetry Not Working

Hi.

Yesterday the ‘X’ symmetry stopped working. I can see the two red dots on my model indicating that ‘X’ is active but only one side of the mesh is altered. I initialized the program with no result. I cloned the model with no result.

I am using the move tool with a setting of ‘1’ for point sculpting. If I turn the setting up, to above ‘30’ the ‘X’ symmetry works again, but it doesn’t work on low settings anymore. Why?

Thanks!

you lost your symmetry at some point.
you can try a tool>deformations>smart resym
Mask off half the model at a low subD level first. perform the deformation.
step up 1 level, perform again.
pay attention to the info bar at the top, it will give you information about how close your sym level is, or if the operation can be possible at all.

Do you also have a perfect sym line down the X axis on your model?
Is that line still straight?

Thank you, Goast.

It was a centerline issue. It was not visible to the eye but when I sent the model to Maya and re-established a perfect centerline along ‘0’ my problem resolved.

While on the subject of ‘Centerline’ I was just wondering if there was a way inside ZBrush to easily recapture the centerline as there is in Maya? In Maya all one has to do is select the centerline vertices, type ‘0’ into a box and the centerline resolves perfectly to zero.

Also, when editing centerline points in profile the points do not behave. They shoot off into space. In Maya, profile point sculpting is without issue. This ‘shooting off into space’ while profile sculpting is how I lose symmetry in ZBrush. Very annoying.

Thanks!

I found if I had symmetry problems and wanted to maintain a symmetrical model, it is easier for me to export to my 3D app, zero the centerline, delete the half I didn’t want then mirror and weld. It’s a lot more accurate than trying to resym in ZBrush.

Thanks, Zber. I agree. ~S.~

This might explain some of the issues I am having with my models…an imperfect centerline. I am grateful for this thread.
