X Files. The Cigarette Smoking Man

Hi All, as a huge x-files fan (I know, very much with the times here) I have always wanted to attempt to recreate the cigarette smoking man. He is an incredibly intriguing character and a very distinct looking one as well. I started posting some of this to my sketchbook, but wanted to create an independent thread following just the progression of this character.

I have already put a considerable amount of time into him, unfortunately little bits and pieces here and there at night when not planning a wedding, or working late with my job. So I’ll start by posting a few of the earlier work in progress pieces then will catch it up to where I am now, and hopefully soon will have a finished work to share with everyone.

And some of my further works, to get this thread up to where I am now with the model. Critique welcome of course. Currently I’m adjusting some minor proportional issues, namely with the size of his shoulders and arm lengths.

First some render tests and subsurface tests, all in maya with mental ray. No textures, just shader:

Just a little update. About halfway through texturing and setting up shaders so for now, I focused on clay renders to show work in progress. He now has pinstripes and some refined folds. Not entirely happy with the cloth yet, but it’s progress.

And even though I consider this image to be kinda rough for a texture render, I’ll show it anyway, for work in progress sake, and if anyone wants to throw in their two cents. I am very happy with how the suit’s textures are coming out at least, and the skin is getting close.

Getting the likeness of a person is a hard thing. I immediately recognized who this is from the thumbnail, and the last time I saw the Cigarette Smoling Man was in the last episode of The X-Files, and this was 11 years ago

Ha! Awesome! Thanks Patrick. I’ve really been very meticulous in getting his face as close as possible to the real guy. I recently did a rewatch of X-files on netflix and really loved the show. Thought he’d be a great character to make. Been fun working on this project. Always good to hear he’s recognizeable from a thumbnail.
