Working On Separate Pieces

How can I work on separate pieces and then put them connect them? I’m not talking about accessories I mean pieces like arms and a head and then connect it to the torso etc. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks!

Research “subtools” :+1:

That’s how you work with multiple objects, regardless if they’re accessories or body parts. Just know that subtools will not connect seamlessly when separate.

So, for instance, having an arm as a separate subtool is ok as long as there’s a sleeve. If the character is shirtless, however, you will easily be able to tell that the arm is a separate subtool. If you end up working that way, there are merging options, plus in ZB OSX, there are new welding features. It’s best, though, if you want a particular thing to look like one piece, to have it as one tool or subtool. You can even set up small scenes with subtools with multiple objects and characters.

Good luck!

Yeah subtools are great BUT! what if let’s say I have an arm I really like from one model and a torso from another and I want to merge them seamlessly but they have different sub D levels, how can I do this and not have sleeves etc. Oh an by the way if they have different point counts at the connection area how can make this match up?

That would be a question I’m unable to answer accurately (same guy, different name/computer)

I’m not as thorough of a modeler as I am an illustrator. I can dance around a 2d project like a freak of nature, but not in 3d. I’m more of a ZBrusher than a modeler. The art makes sense in ZBrush, so I don’t really do math. There’s probably a way, but I’m not your go to guy beyond the “subtools let you work with multiple objects” statement.

I do know you can mask and subdivide parts of a model, so the different subdivision levels might not matter. Good luck getting all of the points to match up…hell, just keep it classy and sculpt an original character…

What you would have to do here is merge the two subtools (SubTool Master will make this easy) and then use retopology to create a new single geometry that you can project the details from the originals onto.

After you merge the subtools in OSX, isn’t there a new “weld” feature that I read about? Could be seeing things again…
