Working on certain parts / Hiding other parts?

I have seen videos where people are sculpting a head/bust, but the rest of the body is hidden. I’m guessing it is to keep the screen clear and keep the active points down.

My question is, if I had a whole body imported and ready to sculpt, but I only wanted to detail the face for now, what is the best way to do that? I want to be able to go back and work on the other parts after detailing the face -and- without losing detail. I’ve seen Dynameshing separate body parts together, but it’s just not the same. Am I crazy or is there another way?

I’m not so great with the terminology, but I am learning. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, you could just have certain polygroups visible while working on them. Or you could use the selection tool to isolate parts of the mesh you want to work on.

So would I be able to increase the subdivision level while doing that? Or is it better to get to a high subdivision level and then isolate the part I want to work on?

You can switch to lower or higher subdivisions even with parts hidden. You can also subdivide them, but it will affect only the visible part, something that probably you don’t want. Normally you will use polygroups to have pre selected areas to hide.
An useful function also is the solo mode in transform menu that will show only the current subtool no matter the visibility status of the other subtools.

Zmodeler doesn’t like parts hidden. But in this case you typically have low poly models.
