Workflow for Maps

Hi everyone,

I (think-lol) I have created displacement maps and normal maps correctly, but I cannot view them on my model, so I guess I am doing something doofus-ish.

How do I know if its worked if I cannot see it applied? Hmmm:)

Is this the right workflow?

Make high res model- retop ready for animation- project onto lowres mesh- create uvmaps- assign to model-create displacement maps and normal map.
Apply displacement map and decimate with the map on the model?

When I decimate my model ignores my mesh that is all quads and goes all triangular-am I doing everything wrong? lol

Any help is very much appreciated and thank you so much to everyone who has helped me before, especially Beta Chanel:)
No laughing…oh go on just a bit if you must.

You can’t “view” displacement or normal maps inside of Zbrush.
You don’t decimate animation ready models.

Decimation is to help the baking process if you’re using another application for baking.
It can also help with rendering still images inside of another package that supports raytraced lighting

You apply your displacement/normal map inside of another application for rendering.

Thank you Beta Chanel, I shall now call you Yoda.

I see, brilliant, thank soooo very much for the quick response. Fingers crossed it won’t explode in the other app.

Just me talking out loud here.
So when the low poly model is taken into the external 3d app, the dis map gets applied to it then it looks all pretty? lol

Whoop Whoop I shall let you know how it goes and thanks again:)

“Should” look all pretty is correct. But working with displacement maps inside of different render engines is an art in its own right. So the chances of it looking pretty are actually pretty slim.

Once you run some test and do some research on using displacement maps inside your engine you should be able to get “pretty” results.

Good luck.

Ha Ha everything is trial and error and I take on board all your marvelous advice Beta Chanel. Thank you so much . I would of spent along time still trying to “project all” (ha ha) if it wasn’t for your help.

Awesome, so the next hurdle cometh, bring it on displacement maps!!! lol
