Awesome work man!!
Do a Siggraph 2013 dvd for all the presentations for those who don’t have the opportunity to make it to their events. I would love to make it out and see the show but, it’s just not an option for me.
Thanks everyone, you are all too kind! I fixed the links to the high res images. I have no idea why they keep breaking. Hopefully this sticks this time. Ill do my best to answer all questions later tonight.
If the links are still broken to anyone you can always navigate my site at www.believerdeceiver.com and right click and save the images from my portfolio section. For some silly reason, sometimes the links work, sometimes they dont. No idea what in the world is up with that. I assume its an issue with my website =/
amazing work sir , you are one of Favourites and always nice to see new artwork from you
Truly inspiring work Jason!
Like it was said b4, another level to strive for!
Wish I could’ve been there.
Congratz for the Top, well deserved!
Cheers.
Very amazing work. I also hope they release some of the demos. I’d love to see your techniques and workflow for Fibermesh and Noisemaker.
Very inspiring. Look forward to seeing more.
Really nice work! So many details takes minutes to go over it once!
Dang!!! The level of detail is amazing.
The character looks so badass…
Hope Pixologic, upload a recap of the presentations.
I’m going to agree with this plus anyone else who commented about seeing the demo. There’s such a level of complexity going on here and I know I would be one of the first in line to purchase a video showing off just how this was done. Trying to wrap my mind around a design like this in the first place is tough enough but making it come to life like this feels so far out of reach.
Goodness. This is stunning work mate.
Congratulations, man. Not just on top row…on this piece period. Complete mastery of your craft. Epic in every sense of the word. Stunning work and completely inspiring. This one sets the bar higher for everyone sitting in front of a screen with the intent of making a digital sculpt. Wow.
First off thanks to all of you for your kind words and encouragement! Ill talk a bit about the process on this guy. This guy took about 2 months, maybe a little longer, not sure. I would work a few hours at night and some on the weekends. Towards the end I was working like a dog to finish it though. Its really hard for me to pinpoint the exact amount of hours. I would say a month of work. Since I was designing on the fly, things took a bit longer, not every piece worked out, I had to redo a few things here and there. At one time he had a helmet but it just got too busy so I ditched it, it was the right decision. If it was off a concept it would have been faster.
All organic forms were created in Zbrush from a sphere and dynamesh. Most of the armor I made basic shapes in XSI and brought in to bash up, detail, and move around. All in all, the total came out to 181 subtools and Zbrush handled like a champ! I was really shocked. Now, with every subtool shown it bogged down pretty bad but it wasn’t horrible. It was 181 subtools, what can one expect =) The BPR render would take a long time, so I ended up decimating most of it and rendering. He rendered in about 7 minutes or so. The majority of the subtools were fiber mesh. The way I like to do it, is I create several chunks of hair and duplicate and mix and match to get a nice variety. Since there was so much hair the subtools grew and grew. Sadly, for the demo, it is impossible for me to cover every aspect of creation. Instead I focused on my use of fiber mesh and high frequency details. This all should be released by Pixologic soon, they are gonna make that stuff available. Another thing that I did was split subtools out so I could have different noise maker patterns on different areas. You can always bake the noise into the mesh but you need the resolution to support it. For smaller pieces, I just split them apart applied noise and just never committed the noise to the mesh. That way you get higher fidelity and you don’t need the resolution in the mesh. In this form, its a glorified bump map, same thing.
Ill try to answer individual questions best I can
WilsonReyes - The hair being thick was a stylization choice. He has stylized proportions and I wanted thicker heavy, nappy hair, it just works with this style. I agree, if I was goin for photo real the hair would be far too thick.
Piggyson - Man I cant thank you enough for all the tips and techniques you shared with me. Im already trying out so many more ways to do hard surface in Zbrush. Im very committed to diving into it hardcore! Im excited about what I can do and how much faster Ill eventually get at it. Im a tiny bit slow and clunky now but I see massive potential. Thanks again!
marianosteiner - Ive followed your work for some time now and Im always impressed, very good stuff!!! Thanks for the compliment =)!!!
DingHui - I do plan to texture this guy, eventually. Its been a while since Ive done some high res texturing and I miss it!. Im a little burned out on this fella for the moment but I might start a thread on cg feedback and do a texture update there. Would be cool to show updates of my process since it will take a bit of time to make.
meng007 - Thanks! I loved your bull rider. Seriously impressive work!
jmenna - Joe, as always, I truly appreciate it. Thanks for the encouragement! I always look forward to seeing your sculpts too man. I’m really looking forward to catching your presentation when they release it. I heard really great things! =)
cdizzle - The hands are all one mesh. I planned to split those out but I just didint have time in the end.
Beowulf - Mark, Thanks a ton man! Been a fan of all you guys for the longest time. Was awesome getting to meet you. Im so bummed I had to leave about half way through your presentation, had to make my flight. Cant wait to see it when they post it.
totally mind blowing! cant wait to see the vids showing your fibermesh and noise techniques!
OH ~~~So Amazing work !! Detailing rocks! good job ,dude. i curious how long have you sculpted the great barbarian ?
Once again, this is kickass !! 3Q for sharing
Wow …u got mad skills…
thanks for sharing ur work…
Jason… insane!
OK… first i have to say, holy crap this is awesome. second how would one go about posing something with that many subtools? i mean transpose would work for a pile of pieces but not everything is gonna cooperate right?
wow man… that’s amazing!!! I was impressed with the amount of detail. Very motivating! Congratulations for the top row more than deserved. I also really like his other works.
WOW spectacular!
Wow really awesome work, are you going to paint it?
