Wolf's Den

Hi folks,

my name is Wolf Kaulen, 23 years old and I’ve just finished studying Game Art & 3D Animation in Germany.
So I’ve joined this awesome community about one year and a half ago (that’s when I started using zBrush) but I’ve never dared posting some of my own stuff.

I finally found the courage to do so today. I hope to make some new friends over here with whom I can share my love to zBrush an 3D modelling and sculpting in general. Any C&C will be greatly appreciated since I want to push myself to continually getting better as an 3D Artist!

The first piece I’m gonna share with you is a fantasy version of Master Yoda. I did this one for ‘ZBrush Challenge of the Month’ Facebook group a few months ago. The challenge was to reimagine a famous character from the movies in another universe. So I went with Yoda. This is my take on Shaman-Yoda:

I’ve also uploaded a decimated version to sketchfab: https://skfb.ly/QVyU

Next up is the Midgard Serpent from the norse mythology. This piece was also done for ‘ZBrush Challenge of the Month’. Topic was Mythological Creatures.

I found this awesome antique bronze matcap at Pixologic’s Matcap Library.

In Norse mythology Jörmungandr was the son of Loki and the giantess Angrboda. It was once a resident of Asgard, home of the Æsir. But it was banished to the great sea surrounding the mortal world of Midgard by Odin. It grew so large it could surround the entire earth and grasp its own tail. That’s why it is also called the World Serpent or Midgard Serpent. The day it releases its tail, Ragnarök, Twilight of the Gods, will begin…

I like your work, really do.

The Jörmungandr reminds me a little of how Wagner describes Fafnir as a ‘Wurm’ , not a ‘Drache’ (worm, and dragon). I really like that. The way it holds its own tail reminds me of Ouroboros. Breaking the circle, it also breaks the rhythm of the Universe ( Wagner describes this when Fasolt says to Wotan: 'Was du bist, bist du nur durch Verträge’ , stating that the order of the entire Universe under the leadership of the Gods is only a question of treaties)

The Yoda I also like, but I prefer him without the beard. I guess you added the beard for the difficulty, but it does, my idea, not go well with the rest of the sculpt. I guess a sculpted and stylized one would have been better.
But I like how close you come to a samurai, especially in that last frontal image. The first images as perhaps a bit harsh on lighting.

Keep on posting!

Hi Erik,
thank you very much for your kind words.
I really admire your knowledge about those things!
I gotta admit Ive never actually thought about sculpting the beard but I believe you are right. Would have matched the overall style way better. Maybe Ill go back and change that  When I sculpted Yoda I was just discovering how rendering in zBrush works. I will upload some newer sculpts later today. Hopefully you will notice some progress in those

Did those on a live sculpting session at GamesCom 2016 in Cologne, Germany.
I had a lot of fun doing those so I decided to create a small universe and add some information to it’s race.

Rakaryan scientists are said to be the best in the whole sector. They excel in researching antique technologies as well as they do in developing new weapons or drives…

The second sculpt I made live at GamesCom this year:

May I present to you: Cpt. Hando Akanho. Captain of the ‘Loki’, wanted by Rakaryan officials for burglary, smuggling, piracy, blackmail and multiple murders…

The actual image is like 10 MB that’s why I had to compress it. Sadly lost a lot of detail because of that :<

t’s 1915 - World War 1
Somehow a combination of different chemical weapons caused both soldiers and civilians alike to mutate and turn into horrible miscreations.

Made this for “ZBrush Challenge Of The Month”.

I just finished my entry a few minutes ago and spend so much time on this I nearly lost it^^ but even if I was about to quit quite often I am very happy on how it turned out!
I collected tons of reference and watched hundreds of hours of WW1 documentaries… I think I’ve now seen every single documentary in the interwebz that is connected to this topic in any way smiling_face

C&C always welcome and much appreciated!
