Wise Ones - (WIP)

Freak: I’ll have to give ZBrush’s built in retopo tools another try. When I’ve tried using them in the past I didn’t feel like I had enough control, but that was probably just my lack of experience with them.

ministerart:Thanks so much, I dig your work too. Yes, I’d like to see these 3D printed when they’re done :).

Etcher: Thanks for the encouragement. I greatly appreciate it. Man, living in Belgium must give you a lot of inspiration. So many European cities and towns have such fantastic architecture and sculpture to marvel at. No wonder why so many beautiful video games are being created in Europe (The Witcher, Age of Conan, etc.). Here's the concept I've come up with for Wise Three - She's going to take a bit more work than the others, but she's going to be able to do some magical things with her hands :).

very cool ideas, and nice job with the retopo. I wouldn’t bother with zbrush;s retopping tools they are not very practical for the most part. Plus with GoZ coming, the way your currently retopping will be even more benificial.

The hand woman are simply awesome! They remind me of how Hogarth approach the hand anatomy.

I second this, such a cool idea…you have to make her!

Wierd man. Really wierd. haha. Looking great though :+1:

Fantastic stuff!

I really like these concepts, especially the second one :+1:

The Zbrush version are nicely sculpted .

I greatly appreciate the positive feedback :).

Yes womball, I'm trying to use Hogarth's sytle on the hands. Wise Three still needs a lot of sculpting work, but I think I've captured the main aesthetic I was envisioning for her. As with the first two Wise Ones, I went from my concept sketch, to rough ZBrush sculpt, to retopo in Max. [color=SeaGreen]Wise Three's specialty is communication. Rather than use words to communicate, she uses her hands to construct models of the objects or concepts she wants others to understand. I've placed the temple (which I didn't model) between her hands as an example of how she does this. Updated sculpt June 14th - In addition to much more sculpting work on her, I'm also plan on giving her hair.

*****
(5 stars)

Love the Burne Hogarth fingers. Makes me nostalgic.

Hi Eric, Wise III is beautifull! Beautifull drawing, beautifull idea, beautifull sculpt.

Quote:“Man, living in Belgium must give you a lot of inspiration. So many European cities and towns have such fantastic architecture and sculpture to marvel at.” You are so right Eric, I’m living in a medieval town - 3 minute walk to a huge Gothic church- 30 min car drive to the house where Rubens lived, etc, etc. And you know what, when I was 17, I didn’t notice those things because I was dreaming of walking on Venice Beach and working out at Gold’s with the likes of Lee Haney an Rich Gaspari… .Many folks in our town walk around going about their daily bussiness without even noticing the beautifull surroundings. Probably just like your walks on the beach: are those because you need to work on your tan, or to show off your latest pair of Raybann sunglasses? Or, do you absorb the power of the elements? the ocean with everything that lives in it - with a history going back millions of years? Its so visible (and “feelable”) in your works that your eyes and mind are “open”. We can only be thankfull for this computer and internet technology providing us with visualization and communication techniques in helping us to get our ideas out.

-interesting times Eric-

Again, looking forward to the updates! :+1: !

Great sketches!!! I think they beat the models

I’d like to see you get your sculpt closer to what your drawing looks like.

  • broaden the jaw
  • make the eyes smaller
  • fix the ears
  • add that mask crease to the face

acmepixel: Thanks for the stars :). When her hands are done, I hope to really have that Hogarth look with some additional detailing.

Etcher: Thanks so much for the kind words. Yes, I do envy you living in Belgium. When I was in my early 20s I came close to moving to Prague. What a gorgeous place. I know what you mean about people taking things for granted such as historically beautiful architecture.

cherub_rock and dustinbrown: I agree, oftentimes my 3D models don't have the loose creative quality of my sketches. This is something I definitely have to work on :+1:.

Wise III still needs A LOT of work, but here's a first quick pass at making the sculpt feel more like the sketch -

OOooh! I like this. Reminds me of some of the art in Giermo Deltoro (sp?) Pan’s Labyrinth, Hell Boy series. Very cool.

Eric first of all congrats on your steady improvement as a
sculptor  :+1:

I really like this piece .
Just had an idea for an animation that would look great.
Imagine her being a full body character.
First shot close to her face camera zooms out slowly and
shes standing on a balcony of the same house she has on her head.
That house is again placed on the same character
and it loops on and on and on and on.
Thatd be awesome :stuck_out_tongue:

Prosthesis: Thanks man! If these Wise Ones make you think of Guillermo del Toro’s creatures, then I’m on the right track :). During an interview with Guillermo del Toro a few months back he talked about how when he first began making movies he didn’t have money to hire anyone so he learned all about special effects and computer graphics he needed to incorporate into his movies. He also always keeps a sketchbook handy for when creature or story ideas come to mind.

Disco Stu: I love your idea Disco Stu. That could be an extremely dramatic visual/animation. I’m thinking about animating these guys and if I do I’ll definitely incorporate your idea. Of course I’ll give you credit.

Here’s a Wise Three update.

ZBrush renders -

My biggest goal after this update will be to give Wise Three more personality.

EricArtman, the only thing I can say is that I love these characters and the ideas behind them :+1:

I love Disco Stu idea too about the animation

Good job

awesome designs!..love them
I would have really liked to see the last one closer to the drawing though to see how the organic blend of hand to head was tackled…
great stuff though!

Wow, very nice idea. I love the style. I think the hands are awesome! I need to be doing stuff like this! :+1:

both houses work great did you already have them built lying around somewhere on your harddrive?
