WIP - My cyclops-idea!

The idea is to recreate Ray Haryhausens epic creature from “Sinbads 7th Voyage”
BUT as if it was made today for a Michael Bay movie of sorts. (beefy-evil-vainy-big)
Though I still want him to be recognizable as “Mr.Cyclops.”

I started some time ago on the head in maya, but progress has been slow.
I have now done teeth and expect ill be continuing on the head as soon
as i have some spare time. I work with maya profesionally with modeling,
rigging and animating. Texturing and rendering is hard and something i
have never really grasped, but hopefully this project will chalenge me.

Zbrush is new to me, so i will be using this as training,
but ofcourse all coments will be apreciated,
nothing is to dumb to be mentioned!

Great choppers! Maybe a few blue or purple veins in the gums?

So, I have made some time out of my busy workweek to continue on my cyclops.
Basemesh was made in Maya and I am thinking that the general form of the
head/face is allmost where i want it…

The weakest point at this time is the ears, how do I make tough monster ears?
Remember that i am using the Harryhausen version as a guideline.
I want my version to be modernized and beefier.
Any one got some tips? comments?

And a good idea for how to merge a new body/torso model
(that i will be making shortly in maya,)
with head model, in zbrush would be apreciated!!

The eye is, perhaps, a bit too high on his forehead. Also the lower half of the face is too wide. It gives him an almost clown-ish look. Nice work, though!

Victimville: thanks for your feedback! Regarding the gums, there are vains in my texturemap, but they dissapear in the render.
I have been trying to render with normalmaps on sss shaders, but so far my renderskills hold me back.
Regarding the face, i feel that he isnt nearly as triangular as he could be, so i dissagree on the “clown” comment.
I dont want him to be round or square in the face, and the triangular shape is more in keeping with the original design.
( or am i completely off? ) I do agree with the eye comment and will look in to it! im thinking i will move the horn further back,
and give him mor of a forehead… ill see what i can do when i have time.

Here’s a little scetch that i made. Its been a long time since i drew anything, but the basic short but powerfull thing is what im after!

The eye might also be set a bit deeper into the forehead, that might help. I see from your sketch where you are going. Maybe if the mouth were a bit more cruel looking? This is just nit-picking since you are doing a good job so far.

Thanks for kind words victimville.
I am thinking of using this character for animation,
so i am modeling him as neutral as possible to easier
create blendshapes and facialrig later on.
the mouth will get fierce enough

So i got some more time to work on the zbrush model.
I have moved the face about a bit and made him even more triangular. I moved the horn and brow back,
and created a second horn… (one horn is sooo 1958! ) Some detailing has happened,
but im not quite sure if i agree with what i have done… please comment.

I also started on a body in maya. I created a tempmesh from spheres, to block out the basic shape.
Then i merged them, and made them live. Then i used the create polygon tool to fill inn my new mesh.
This worked better than expected and really speeded up my modeling process.
I now need to figure out how to nicely combine my body and head model in zbrush.

anyone pointing me in the right direction gets 10 points! :sunglasses:

I see where you are going now. Keep at it!

a tribute to a pioneer i see. you’re definitely on the right track and i would say to just keep studying the pictures and worry about the detail later. make sure that you are completely happy with the form before you move on. this could be a great piece, excited to see more from you!

Hi again. I’ve been around the web searching for a decent way of combining the 2 meshes, head and body. But i have not found a way of keeping the details that i have created now. Seems that the only decent way of combining would be to merge them in maya. I would have thought there was a way of projecting the old (highrez) details on to the new lowpoly model. is there?

Please help if you can.
