[wip] Gurb from Octopia

Hi guys !
i start my first wip ! In fact my second, but it was too ambitious for a beginner like me

So, this wip will be more simple.

My objective is to create a cartoon character from the beginning to the render into zbrush.

Concept :

An octopus from Octopia ^^ named : Gurb
He is a warrior class.

I just finish zphere modelisation.
My reference are : PIcture of Octopus, lobster, crab, artworks from pirate of the carabeen.
For detailling Gurb, simon blanc ā€œno more wineā€

Let’s go !

My actual work:

I’ll Hope, you’ll find it cool
Hope i will learn a lot with your you too !!

cheers.
Oliro (France)

Hey Oliro!

Cool zsphering! But for that kind creature, I would activate the symmetry! That would spare a lot of sculpting time and you wouldn't need to do each limbs again and again at the beginning!

Perhaps splitting it up into several cloned subtools would spare even more time!
Just have to sculpt it once and let’s clone the work!

Great work!! Did you watch any of simon’s videos in the ZClassroom?

THks Mind, i think , i have a solution
next time i will do it differently.

Thank you Martin, yes , i watched this amazing tutorial.
It will inspire me a lot for detailling tentacles. That’s my first sculpt

Cheers.

Hi guys !

here is a little update.
I am looking for the concept of the head of Gurb ^^
After several weeks of tutorial, It’s my first true sculpting into zbrush.
I began sculpting it in three different ways.
A little sculpt, just to help me for ā€œedit new topologyā€.
If you find something good or bad, comments are welcome.

Cheers.
OlirO

A little Update.
I continue to learn quietly the software, and this evening I wondered how to make an eye.
i 'll decided to use an alpha and test it on Gurb.
It is just a small test before sculpturing in detail.

Next time, i will use pixolator eye tutorial…it seems to be very cool !
I hope one day to be able to make things incredible which I see here…
Cheers.

Hi OlirO, what an awesome progress! Really great! You should be proud!
But – what happend to Alfred?

THank you very much Moni-Poroni !
your comment is actually what i needed… I gives me a lot of motivation.
I began a retopology for GUrb…and i dont have any subtool
so it’s really hard … 18 tentacules !
Next time, i will do it differently…

Alfred was a project too ambitious for me and my level … and it seems to be Too close of a digital tutor tutorial. I want to make mine, not reproducing.

THanks again.
OlirO

Hi OlirO! Nice concept, good progress. Like the idea so much, and your zsphere model is amazing. Keep me updated about the progress!

Hi all !
I continue to spend a lot of time on zbrush to progress…the soft is amazing but very hard at the beginning.
After a very long retopology. Finally, i decided to fix the concept of the head of GUrb.
Hope you like it !

Now, i am going to put the details to the body and finsh the work in the last subdivision before polypainting.

cheers.
OlirO.

With the new details you“ve added I like him even more!
The face looks alread great. I“d love to see more details on his body, too.
And I“m looking forward to seeing the polypaint. Do you have any colors in mind already?

Thank you very much moni !
Tonight i will add tongue and teeth
after , i wiil attack the body sculpt.
for polypainting, no idea yet… in never use polypainting
so, i will see in action

Hi,
A little update
Tonight , i have done the tongue.
here is the pic :

Cheers.
OlirO

Hey Olivier!
Very nice update on your little guy! I’m amazed to see your progress knowing you started to learn ZBrush not later than a month ago!:grimacing:

Looks like you started to play with alphas to do the tongue texture.
Work the main shapes as much as you can before going into the tiny detailing, that’s a rule of thumb! I think you still can improve the overall volumes of the tongue (flatten the tip a bit more? make it less fleshy? reduce the bump in the middle?).

For the teeth, I’d suggest you to make a seperate subtool for that. You would have more freedom to give them a nice shape and place them a bit more behind the lips. Right now, it looks like it’s just an extrude from a serie of masked dots drawn on the bottom side of the upper lip, and I’m affraid you don’t have enough polys in the height to curve them even a tiny bit.
Like that:

You should try to use the inflat brush a bit for the tip of the teeth, to make them slightly less pointy.

I hope that helps, keep it up buddy, you are making giant steps in your learning process. :):+1:

Hi Oliver! Nice progress. I really like the lips, and the tongue. I agree with goldo_O. Keep the subdiv level as low as possible. Only subdivide after you have nothing to do on a certain level. But your character developing nicely. Can’t wait to see it finished.

Thanks for your help and comments ! It gives me a lot of motivation !

goldo_O : Thank you Adrien ! You inspire me a lot, i began zbrush because of zbrusher like you !

For the teeth i have done a test in order to place the tongue. I’ll do it tonight, with your advice and pic reference, i hope to get better results.
For the tongue, your suggestion are great ! i am going to make some modification ^^
et ton anglais est tellement bon que j’utilise le traducteur lol

Bukoba : Thanks for your advice and comment. Your dino teeth will inspire me :+1:

Cheers.

Hi olivier! Nice to see you here.
Your little octupusMan is starting great.:+1:
Like others guys i would say to not go too crazy on details for now.
Work on form and volum, try to define as much as you can the shape at the lowest level and rise subdive level slowly when you can’t add more detail on the current level.
I will stay tuned.
Keep good progress :+1:

In addition to all good advice that you“ve already gotten from goldo_o, Bukoba and shuma I“m just here to leave another compliment: You“re doing a great job and I“m looking forward to seeing the modificated gurb.

Hey shuma !
Nice to see you here too
THanks for your advice, i will follow it
Have you a current wip ? i will be very happy to see it :+1:

Moni :),
thank you very much !! i saw your video ! i hope to see again another one soon.

Zbrushcentral is a great community, i really enjoy it.

Cheers.

hello,

A little update after a lot of problem with my Gurb and zbrush.
I have done a second retopology  at the first , i have 6000 points  now only 2500… i buy Ram for my pc too… 30 seconds for one undo was too hard for me.
Now i hope, i will study quietly
I worked on the tongue and teeth.
A little bit on the body and shape the tentacles.
A litlle bit on the right claw and think about the attitude of gurb
I post here one test of attitude.
I also add eye material for test which i found on the material topic.
special thanks for the guys who shares their matcap.
