Windows 8

|So…
|
I have windows 8 now…
Its got one thing I like; a nifty progress bar when copying files, but overall I find most of the new stuff questionable at best…

Has anyone else got 8 and have trouble with all the extra stuff?
I’m seriously thinking of switching back to Windows 7 if thats possible, its a pain in the neck in the short term but its looking better in the long term.
Basicly I am not saying that windows 8 is bad, its just got a lot of things I neither need nor want, Namely:

  • All of the metro stuff, its slow, ugly and cumbersome.
  • Charms, what the HELL are those for??? They simply must go, I do not use anything in them ever.
  • The loss of the start menu makes getting at my stuff annoying g to say the least.
  • Programs that are running (especially ZBrush) do not always appear in the taskbar like they should, this forces me to use the keyboard (Alt Tab) to find it.

I might get one of those utilities that get rid of all that but I’m curious to see what people here think first.

Cheers!

HI there, I went over to Win8 at launch I think , it was cheap enough.

Would agree with everything you said but there are some nice touches in some of the dialogues as you point out and the task manager is really quite good. You no longer have to mess with msconfig.sys to edit startup stuff, not that was ever a major hard ship. Nice improvements but nothing vital I’d say.

I have installed Start8 from Stardock (about 10 USD I think) and it makes my WIn 8 behave like Win 7 - start up menu back and all that, log in straight to desktop etc. Have to say I don’t mind Win8 at all (with Start8) but I also never ever use charms or the app store - maybe I should look at it again as it has been a while!

Does Zbrush work properly under the Win7 taskbar then? I seem to recall (but could be wrong) that it has never played well with the windows task bar. But memoty is patchy

I have heard that the next WIndows 8 update (codenamed Blue I think) might bring back the start menu. It would be sensible I think from MS point of view. So might want to wait and see a few weeks before reverting to Win7.

Guess what I’m saying is, install Start8 (or wait for Blue) and crack on. It ain’t worth the hassle of reverting back, or indeed if you are on Win7 the hassle of upgrading!

Actually I installed a little free thing called Pokki, it works great, it boots you right into the desktop, gets rid of charms and gives you a thing very much like the old start menu.
So far its perfect.
I agree about the task manager, its terrific, and some of the dialogue boxes are splendid, I like copying files because its actually FUN to watch the progress bar… something I thought no one could improve upon yet they did.

Once I got rid of all the “metro” crap I still had a hell of a time getting all the so called apps to stop using the internet, in the end since I don’t know what 90% of them are and don’t feel like spending the amount of time it takes to actually uninstall them I just used the firewall and blocked them all. It was sort of insane, they were using a little over a GB a day sometimes more and I only have 10gb per month…
Very aggravating and rather expensive as I didn’t realize what was happening till I got a MASSIVE internet bill.

I hope they fix all this nonsense, its pointless and its NOT the future and neither are touch screens, I don’t want peoples grubby fingers on my monitor, and that frankly includes my own.

Silly Microsoft
GRIN!

Fortunately I haven’t still upgrade my windows 7 to windows 8 after reading your comments about windows 8.

I got Windows 8 and I can say its been the most problem free Win I’ve used, no I’m not a paid actor
Win8 is basically 7 without translucency, I do miss that. the UI is more open is some ways.
All my steam games work native or good in Backward Compatibility mode
Maya 2013 and Abobe works super

Ounce you FIX IT windows 8 it won’t bug you anymore

  • I try to keep Win8 as uncontaminated as possible all my web browsers are PortableApps.com and running on separate drive.
  • I uninstalled all but 3 Metro apps
  • Internet Explorer is still the default BUT I turned off IE metro (open the IE options > Programs > Always open in IE desktop)
  • IE being default doesn’t matter because now FireFox and Chrome never trigger links outside themselves anymore
  • I re-targeted file from metro apps too portable or 3rd party apps, I only see start menu when I log in and for handful of icons that don’t want clogging up my desk top
  • change the auto update and maintenance settings

most of the stuff I use daily is ether auto starts or pinned to the task bar

I may sound bragging but it is not what I want to mean. I used different windows since then from windows 98 to windows 8(Wow! looking back at how technology changes can’t believe that’s how old I am now). And, base in my experienced I could tell that windows 8 is easier to use. Although, there are apps in windows 8 are not much relevant but you can uninstall them if that apps is no use to you. In addition, getting myself to be used with this new windows version is the first step I did.
