I’m incredibly impressed with your work, I’ve been going through your thread for what feels like for hours. Congrats on top row as well!
If I could ask a quick question, I read that you take your models to about 50% completion so they have their character and clothing established before posing. Would things like the metal bits in clothing/rings , or laces, and other details like that be left out until after it is posed?
Also your anatomy work is really incredible, do you shoot reference from a model after your client has agreed on a pose? Thanks, and happy new year!

Amazing Spiderman indeed! Love that costume design. Especially the super bold webbing.
Is Natalie Portman the model for (also amazing) Catwoman’s face?
Puuuuurrfect Catwoman! All your work is spotless.
You have god like powers. Really incredible work. Super inspiring to see. Such clean, precise work.
I would love to know what sort of access if any you have to scanned data? Does it play any role in your work at all? If so, what is the quality like that you have access to?
Beautiful work. I love the biker girl. Cool pose and look!
Hi Infinite!
Scans are a tricky subject. They are just penetrating into the realm of general availability, and as such, people have mixed feelings about them. Some think of them as cheating, others see them as a threat. Some use them and keep it a secret. I for one see them as a tool that will become a necessary and regular part of peoples’ workflow over the next few years. At Gentle Giant, we occasionally were given scan data of celebrity heads. These were of various quality, from useless to decent. I have tried to label all of my postings to indicate when a head scan was used. For me, when used, they were usually just a starting point. Sometimes a very good starting point (as in the case of the Glenn character from The Walking Dead – where the scan was unusually clean), sometimes just a very rough indication of general relationships (as in the case of the Scarlett Johansson Black Widow). But either way, like them or hate them, all commercial 3d artists will need to be aware of them and learn how to fit them into their workflow one way or the other. I see scans as similar to Marvelous Designer (a program I have dabbled with, but have yet to get usable results from). Especially now that scans are readily available from places like triplegangers.com. They can help us get to the end result the client is looking for faster and better… or not. When they can, use them, when they aren’t helpful or take longer than doing it a different way (as has been my experience with MD so far), then don’t use them. But in the end, scans and MD and many other things are here. We better get used to them. They will not make a bad artist good. But I think they can be an incredible learning tool. I have learned a great deal about facial anatomy from working with scans over the years. I’m a reference addict. I have been a member of the photo reference site 3DSK.com for years. My human anatomy photo library is nearly 100 gigs! I see scans as an extension of this. Even the tedious job of cleaning up a scan for a client (something I haven’t had to do often, thankfully) is a learning experience. I would encourage everyone to download a scan. Look at it. Clean it up and use it as reference. See what it can do for you. See what you can learn from it. Turn it into a monster or make a skinny scan very muscular. You might be surprised at what you can learn. I was a traditional sculptor for a million years, and the funny thing is, many of my friends who are still traditional sculptors think of digital sculpting ITSELF as cheating. Photography is cheating. Power tools are cheating. Oh, well. What are you going to do? In the end, everyone’s work will speak for itself.
Sorry for the long winded response.
Cheers!
Will
Hi Will,
Many thanks for the reply. It was most interesting, we share a very common mind set here. It’s great to see someone as talented as you so open about your methods. I agree whole heartedly. It’s very evident though that 99.999% of your work is pure skill and craft. Very rare and very powerful.
I’ve never understood the whole 3D scanning is cheating nonsense, like you say it’s a tool. A super powerful tool but you cannot replace having an artists touch.
I’m honestly in awe of your work. Please don’t stop producing more. GG were very lucky to have had you.
Cheers
Lee
