CatMan,
If you can also provide information on who you used to print the models out, your entire art pathway(i.e. are the models sent to the printer straight out of ZBrush, or do you go through other software) and rough costs involved, it would be appreciated.
My son is a dino freak, and I was thinking of making him some special dinos that would be only his, and I can use any and all info on the process.
Thanks,

HI,
While we are waiting for Wild Thing, here are some photographs of actual 3D printouts from designs created in ZBrush. The Robot was modeled in Rhino and ZBrush. The Dog and Leopard are just the raw builds before finishing.

Hi Everyone,
Sorry for taking so long in getting back to you with the final photograph of the 3D printer output, I decided to paint the model and it took a bit longer than it should have…you know… work…family!
Anyhow, my daughter loves it even though she is sweat sixteen and full of other distractions!
The process:
Love the book
Direct model in ZBrush using ZSpheres
Detailing using PM
Magic by ZBrush
Output size 4.5".
Fine detail , like the hair, is always an issue…you can loose it on small models.
That’s it. Hope you like it.
Thanks,
CatManDude.

Great man! I need a printer too
Thnaks Baz,
I love your work too.
You know, one day they will be giving away these 3D printers - just like they do the inkjets today.

Catmandude!
So very cool, I love those characters. Where are you getting these printed up? How much does it cost?
I have a friend whose set up his own (3d printing) service, but I haven’t taken advantage of it yet. Seeing your stuff is spurring my interest again, though.
There’s has been an explosion of custom toys over the last couple of years.
It’s so cool that the process has been democratized to the point where almost anyone can make their own toys.
I wonder how difficult it would be to go from 3D printout to custom vinyl toy…

Hi CatManDude,
thank you for this thread, I love real models too.
And the color version looks great, nice job.
Maybe you have a photo with the unpainted version.
I think it would be interesting to see this side by side.
If you have time for you can give us more technical information.
printer type, export type, material and points of problems.
And maybe a price for this size (only if you want)
Cheers

could you share your insights into the 3D printing? Like cost and what not…
is that the Zcorp printer or the Envision? You got some beautiful feedback. I liked how you modeled the feet right into the platform.
Hello all,
Thank you for all the positive feedback.
Unfortunately, I did’nt happen to take a shot of the raw build.
The printer I used for this was a Z-corp. It is very versatile, but for tiny printouts, the surface is a bit rough and a fair amount of post processing is involved prior to painting.
The material cost is under $20., but a few days are needed for the finishing process.

I took model construction all throughout my 1st through 3rd terms at ArtCenter(being 6th term now). I can honestly say its alot of post process work goes into something that comes off Z-Corp mainly because a starch print requires that you seal it, prime it (with the good stuff ,poly primer) and then fix your surfaces. Its dirt cheap and hellla fast to go with it.
Tell me how fragile were those teeth and smaller details? Did you do all the final solidying and sealing or did they?
What I would recommend in the future for finner results is to use a finer tolerence settings in the Zcorp software ( I have notes on how to do this if you want me to post it). This would have caused the machine to take long to print but might have achieved finer results.
CatManDude: Holy Canolies is that Awsome. I have an old orc I modeled that a friend printed in liquid polymer. The printer you used looks like it’s good because of the cost. I wouldn’t mind sanding, sealing and priming the model. I’ll have to look into it. Great work! Thanks for sharing him…
