Why would a model crash Zbrush 3/4

can anyone please add suggestions/solutions why a model could crash zbrush?

I can work for about 2 minutes then, zbrush will stop working and close. my model is 10 million polys, currently in subd 6, no subtools, no uv. originally an obj from max (not zsphere)

i have a i7 920 cpu and 12gb ram all checked 100% ok. I have reinstalled windows 7 x64 and I still have these crashes.

What are your Preference>MEM setting and the UNDO setting?

bog standard, i havent adjusted them appart from the compact mem bit, where ive tried 256 and 4096. it doesnt matter what one it still goes down.

i was thinking of doing a displacement map, and reimporting the model from max. im certain its the model thats buggering it all up.

The only clue I have is that zbrush has never liked unwelded verts very much, so first thing I would personally check (due to my suspicions about imported models that crash the app) would be that all the verts were properly welded.

You can try to switch the menu Import option of Weld all the way to 0.01, then bringing in the model again and see if it takes care of the crashing.

It may or may not work, but it’s an easy thing to try at least.

Update but i would like to thank you very much for pushing me in the right direction. When I exported the model out as a a Quad and Grouped, and then imported as Merg and tri2quad 90 I cant get the thing to crash now.

so fingerscross i think its worked. I’m going to keep stressing testing this for another 10minutes before i go to bed (2:12am)

Good to hear you got it working :+1: Yeah MRG can work wonders in those cases sometimes, I should have mentioned that as well as Weld.

i thought it was all working fine, then i had the odd crash and thought it was just unlucky. but it kept happening in the same place.

it seems it doesnt matter how many polys i have. It seems more common when i have just the hands and arms visible and scaling in and out of view?
