Why is the Zbrush so bugged/unpolished!?

I love Zbrush, but of all programs I have ever used, this one gives me the most issues. I crash ALL the time for no parent reason (plenty of memory).

I crash when I save, lose work.
I crash when I unhide polygons, I lose work.
I lose symmetry on my models ALL the time. The symmetry line for some reason moves and there’s no way to restore it.

What gives?

  1. list your specs AND zbrush’s Memory preferences, if set incorrectly this will lead to crashes.
  2. do not use CTRL+S for saving EVER! it crashes, use Subtool Master or Tool:save as
  3. symmetry moves for a reason, most likely you’ve unified or reimported, symmetry can be easily fixed with some patience and forethought. i’m not going to explain it here.

Thanks for taking the time to help me out.

Zbrush is crashing alot. I didn’t know about the CTRL+S thing, so I won’t use that anymore. I get crashes alot when unhiding/hiding polgroups, even at low-poly levels. I get random crashes quite a bit as well.

Here is my system specs:

I’ve been trying to pose and then use posable symmetry to sculpt, because transpose master never seems to work properly. But when I use posable symmetry the mid-line always gets moved and can’t be reset as far as I know.

As far as transpose master, I’d love to get it working. It only moves some of the subtools, even when using lasso masking.

up your compact memory, you have it set to 256. so you’re telling zbrush you have 256mb of ram. I’m guessing you’d rather have the 4gb. Anyway, since you have 4gb, you should be safe around 3200 or so, going higher than that you can’t have anything else open, and your OS needs some of that as well.

And I never use poseable sym, so I don’t know about that I always sculpt, pose, refine sculpt to match pose. Just my work flow, so eh, I don’t know.

The crashes are probably coming from your mem settings though. Zbrush was probably writing to the HD more often than not. I rarely crash, unless I am hitting the up or down arrows way too fast.

are you sure your centerline is not offcenter when using poseable symmetry? this would cause issues.
are you using transpose master to combine your mesh to pose with all your subtools? if all your subtools are separate than you can only move one at a time.
to restore your centerline you will need to go to lowest subdivision mask eveything but the center. use transpose to make sure all the vertices are lined up and move the whole line to the center of your tool. then goto the preview window and size up your model, you will see that the little crosshair is not on your centerline, you will need to move your tool so they line up, only then can you perform the resym and smartresym on eact subdivision level upwards to restore symmetry. note that some of your model will have errors at the higher levels due to previous sculpting while off symmetry.
