Why does my object turn black when...

When I click the enable UV button, everything seems ok, but when I click the “Col>Txr” button, my whole tool/object turns black–and I lose all the colors I had filled it with and painted on it–and it saves a totally black texture as well when I click the export button under the Texture menu.

Stats: My first test object with this proceedure consisted of 999,424 polygons. The second object I’m trying this with is 3,997,696, and still the whole object turns black when I press the Col>Txr button.

What am I doing wrong?

thanks for any help or thoughts on this!

Hi,

When you click “enable uv” you still have to assign uv coordinates to your model afterwords. If you’re polypainting, using Auv or Guv are your best bets before converting color to texture. If you need advanced uv mapping for use in other applications it’s best to first create your uvs before polypainting. If you’re just going to use your model and it’s texture in zbrush, Auv or Guv are fine.

after enabling uv’s make sure that you have uvs on you model which is not overlapping , hit the uv check button to do that …

This happens when your uvs over lap or if you dont have uvs in your model.

Canndis, Extra Dimensional, thanks for the advice!

I want to export my object textures to games like Neverwinter Nights 2 and Second Life,
Sadly, when I click the ‘UV check’ button, my whole object turns black… I guess that means the UVs are overlapping?
How do I get around that?

2nd Question:
Does anyone know if there’s a way to make GUV and AUV Tiles work without having to delete the lower geometry levels?
Whenever I click on GUV or AUV Tiles button, it refuses, telling me it will work “only while the lowest subdivision level is active”, however, my object turns black if I try to delete any lower levels of subdivision.

I have no idea how to get it to just turn my object colors into a texture.

I’ll try creating my uvs before polypainting, next…

thanks for any advice!

Darn, I tried creating my uvs BEFORE polypainting, this time, and I’m still ending up with the same problem when I click the ‘Col>Txr’ button; a black object and texture, with no more option to fill the object with a new color under the Color menu (that option becomes greyed out). Geez, not even the undo command can help me back out of this glitched black mess…

Its either overlapping or u dont have uvs

dont del your lower division simply go to lower division and click on guv or auv then goto your higer divisoins and transfer the textures

It… It worked!
Canndis, you’re awesome!

I’m actually able to save/export a texture, now, by first lowering the Poly count ‘SDiv’ level back to 1 so I can hit the GUV button and have that work, THEN I raise the SDiv back up to my max level, 6, and I hit the ‘Col>Txr’ button and it works as well! then I’m able to export it!

This is a great breakthrough for me.

Soon I’ll be able to give great advice to help other people in the same boat as myself, as well.

thanks again!
