white highlights gone when painting on matcaps

Hi I have been searching the forums and can find anything on this.

  1. If I paint rgb values over a matcap material, the white highlights disappear. The highlight is technically still there, but it is greatly muted. Is there a way around this?

  2. Also while im at, I might as well ask how can you make multiple paint layers?

Which ZBrush version are you using?

3.5 release 2

Please upgrade to Release 3.

Also try the standard material which give you full control over specular highlights.

ok, but useing a standard material is already the temporary solution that I came to. There are things you can do with matcaps that you cant do with standard materials, thats why I want to use them.

You may use one of the double-shaders materials and have the first shader be the matcap and the 2nd a standard shader which will allow you to control the specularity.

ok this works I tested it on a mapcap already setup as such. So how do I add an additional shader onto an existing matcap?

It is a simple copy and paste process…

  1. Locate the MatCap material.
  2. Press copy shader.
  3. select a material that already has two shaders assigned.
  4. select the first shader in that material and paste the MatCap shader.
  5. Locate your 2nd material and copy its shader.
  6. Reselect the modified material, activate 2nd shader and paste.

Do not forget to save your new material for later use.
