When can a mesh be left tangled?

Take this example where the mesh is a bit busy around the bend. I was wondering under what circumstances it is…

Vital to untangle the mesh.

Helpful to untangle the mesh

No point to untangle the mesh

I’m particularly interested in the third option, when can I get away with not having to worry about intersecting planes? So I don’t bother with this unnecessarily.

Thanks.

UnTangle when the plan is to export to animate.
Matters not, though, if you are staying in ZB to do stills.

Just to be safe, always save your zspheres to re-create with or without the entanglement.

I have a mesh at the moment that is in a right tangle! Being a noob to ZBrush I am at a loss as to how to untangle it!

Is there a nice tool or something I could use to untangle that section that’s in a knot?

I’d probably say:
No point if you’re rendering in ZB “as is”.
Helpful if you’re rendering externally. (you may or may not encounter issues)
And vital if you want to animate it.

To untangle, use the smooth tool. Try reproject higher subdiv if the hires is a mess.
