What's the best way to pose a symmetrical character?

What’s the best way to pose a character after it has been sculpted with symmetry?

So far I’ve been going to a low sub-division, masking off areas and using the transpose tools, but it really starts to mess up the topology a lot.

Is there a better way to pose characters? I see a lot of people bust out loads of different poses with some sculpts and I’ve no idea how they do it. If the arm is down at the side, even if a move it to a horizontal position it looks terrible and would require loads of reworking for it to look any good.
