warping displacement maps

Has anyone found that after using the crease function in Zbrush on geo that had broder edges (to stop the object from shrinking when its smoothed) that the resulting displacement map is warped around the edges?

even if I uncrease the model and then create a disp map I still get the warping happening.

Any ideas?

PS I really dont want to have to add an extra loop in maya to stop this shrinking happening in Zbrush…

Actually, the edges of the map aren’t warping - they’re being expanded a few pixels so as to help eliminate seams when the map is applied in another program. Everything within the actual UV borders is your exact displacement map. The edge pixels are then also expanded outward to provide a buffer area just in case your animation package doesn’t register the map precisely.

When you’re painting textures on an unwrapped template, you do the same thing – nobody paints their textures exactly to the edges of the UV’s. Instead, the texture is also painted a bit beyond the edges in order to prevent the appearance of seams when the texture is wrapped onto the model.

No thats not the problem. the “pixel bleed” is fine, I know that Zbrush does that. Look at what is happening inside the UVs, around the edges - its like I have gone in to photoshop and liquified those areas and distorted them - I re-applied the map in zbrush to the base mesh obj that I will be displacement mapping in maya and it is different to what I painted originally in maya.

My first guess is that its got something to do with the crease function - which is the first time I have used it. I am going to test it and see if it is or not…

this image demonstrates what I mean - The crease function in zbrush doesnt seem to output a map that can be used - see how the black and white lines are stretching, and on the object on the left (where I added the crease in maya) the lines dont warp…

Next question: What settings are you using in the Tool>Displacement menu when you create the map?

2048 - res

and adaptive - thats it. worked in the past. I am convinced its something to do with the crease tool…

Try one using DPSubPix instead of Adaptive. Go ahead and use the default setting in the slider, since it’s just a test and so will calculate faster.
