Virtual Memory Problem

I have a scene that keeps crashing with a virtual memory error.

It is a little over 19 million polys.

I tried increasing my mem preferences setting to 4096.

I have an I7 Windows 7 with 16 gigs of ram. I put my virtual memory on windows to 32 gigs.

Is 19 milion Polgons just too big for me to run in Zbrush?

Thanks for any suggestions.

By deleting my undo history I was able to work with the file pretty well.

But if I try q-remeshing, or merging down it crashes.

Is 19 million the top end for an I7 with 16 gigs? I don’t have any idea…

I’m in the same boat, to beat it I doubled my ram from 16gig to 32gig upgraded to Win7 professional.
I have 18mil mesh and can’t generate Normals or Displacement. What a wast of money.
Even after this upgrade. So I’m way not impressed by Zbrush it might have all the bells and whistles but if it can’t do the job what’s the point. No wonder people aren’t answer.
Only other way is to use another program like Xnormal or Topogun to generate the maps. Zbrush :td:

I’m not really sure that I need to have an 18 million poly mesh…

I was just wondering if that is the top end.

I didn’t really test doing my painting yet, so maybe 5 million will be enough for what I am doing.

I was just worried about all the crashing and memory errors. I thought maybe I had a bad set up with my virtual memory - or if 18 million was just too much.

After 3 goes at bumping up the virtual memory size I did get it to export the maps on the 18mil mesh, I realized that I didn’t need the memory upgrade at all. So virtual memory is important to get right so that is more a post for windows experts that Zbrush people.
Cheers

Ahh.

I bumped up my virtual memory to 32 gigs. I guess that is not enough.

I’ll have to try a little more.

Thanks.

What did you set your Virtual Mem to?

I’m still crashing with 40 gigs.

Turns out I do need a larger suddivision becasue I have to step down one level to do displacement maps.

I crashed when I was on the lower subdivision level…

Well it’s 70gig max and 60gig min I know ridiculous but it did work in the end.

Thanks.

I finally got mine to work when I went 32 gigs to 40 gigs. I only did the things I had to, saved often, and it took an hour for about 10 minutes of work.

I guess next time I can boost my Virtual mem much higher.

Not sure why it was such a problem. Zbrush was showing that I had memory left the whole time (even when crashing) and it never used much virtual memory (max 7 gigs).
