Hi, I’m sure that this has been asked before and I am just not finding it… I am looking for viewport controls similar to Max (or Maya, or any other 3D app) that will let me pivot in real time about my composition, so a global/viewport rotate rather than one focused on an objects local axis. I’ve seen it done in the tutorials but havent found out where the control is. Help please and thanks in advance.
ZBrush’s camera is like a paint program. It can pan and zoom, but not rotate. This is essential for ZBrush’s 2.5D painting features to be able to work.
To pan the camera, hold down the spacebar and drag on the canvas. To zoom, use the Zoom palette or press + and - to zoom in and out or 0 to return to actual size.
While a model is being edited, you can manipulate it about its local axis, as you’ve already observed.
Thanks much, that was driving me nuts.
Using the + and - keys only works on the 2d canvas.
Is there any way to assign custom key combos to the Move Scale Rotate and Spin controls for a 3d tool?
Is there some way to write a Zscript for it?
In order to have a semi-natural workflow (not having the software get in my way) I need to be able to fully customize my workflow preferences.
Is it that difficult to just give us the option to change the default keyboard commands to what we want? Seems pretty basic.
Anybody got any ideas on how to do this?
I’ve never bothered to check out the keyboard shortcuts cuz I prefer to whip around with my pen but you might start by checking that out.
You can customize the interface too by moving things around to better suit how you work. There was a thread that showed various layouts people use. Ctrl-clickdrag on what you want to move around.
if that helps any.
Thanks for the quick reply Aminuts.
I just checked out the custom UI thread. Nice stuff.
Particularly I want to set up the 3d viewport to work like Maya, holding Alt+Middle Click pans, and Alt+Right Click zooms, Alt+Left Click orbits.
Having a global rotation center would make things much more natural too.
Right now I’m trying my best to like using Zbrush2, which I just shelled out a lot of money for, but I can’t get comfortable enough to have patience with it for very long.
I like Maya and Photoshop, and I get lost and bewildered at the seemingly screwy way Zbrush operates.
Sorry for venting my frustration. But the way it’s hyped makes it look so great, but the learning curve is proving too steep for my patience.
If the next version development people are listening, please consider enabling these options for the sanity of people like me.
Thank you very much!
I think that the Moldy tool script from Svengali make the things the way you want¡¡
Probably is not the UI like 3DMax but functions very well.
Thanks for your attention

It is possible to write a zscript to assign hotkeys to those functions that don’t have them but I don’t think it is possible to change hotkeys already assigned. The hotkeys for Edit mode Move, Rotate, Scale and Spin are extremely easy to use if you are using a tablet and pen - in fact there are tremendous advantages in using a tablet with ZBrush - so the fact that right-clicks and centre-clicks aren’t used may be because of that (OK, there are buttons on a pen but I, for one, never use them!). Perhaps the ability to change hotkeys would be useful but there are so many it would be difficult to avoid conflicts.
