Version 1.5 Beta Test Images

As most of you probably know, one of the steps involved with bringing a new software to market is beta testing. It helps with quality assurance, as well as allowing the developers to get solid feedback on what works or what needs tweaking.

It will probably come as no surprise, but we have had a considerable number of talented ZBrush users volunteering to assist with this! So many, in fact, that it was very difficult to decide who would fill the limited number of beta test slots. We finally settled on a combination of methods: Several members were selected for their expertise in a particular area – Glen Southern with his modeling skills, for example. The remaining slots were filled by random selection from the remaining volunteers. In this way, we felt that we would get a good mix of both experts and general users while hopefully keeping anyone from feeling bad for not being selected. There simply weren’t enough slots to go around.

Our group of testers has been hard at work for the last several weeks, helping us to bring you a better ZBrush. Their results have been outstanding! Now we feel that it’s time to reward both them and you by allowing them to share their artwork and show off some of the new features that version 1.5 has in store for you.

There are a few rules that must be followed, however, and we ask for your understanding in this matter. While the beta testers will be able to say what new features were used to create an image, they are not allowed to offer details of how those features are used. They must keep their comments regarding the new version fairly general until it is released, and if they don’t say something about it when the image is posted, it’s probably because they can’t yet. Please don’t be offended if they don’t answer a question! Simply enjoy the artwork, and look forward to what YOU will be able to do with version 1.5.

Finally, we should note that not all of the features that will be in 1.5 have been implemented in the beta versions that the testers have been using. The images that you will see are a hint of what will be possible with version 1.5.

Anyone who would like to read about the new features that have been announced to date may do so in This Thread

This thread needs to remain “alive” so people have a chance to read it.

Bump

Isnt there a way to make it sticky in Ubb ?

Is true Aurick!! Good work beta tester!!!

Matthew…you stated

So far, I have only seen the “experts”…Southern, Mentat, Picsas, Ztevie-Rae, Pixolator…where are the “general users” that were chosen to demonstrate the beta version? It looks like Pixologic just picked it’s favorites and let them have at it. I can think of a couple of people who contribute quite a bit to the forum, but would not necessarily be considered masters, that would give a different angle on it, but they don’t seem to have been used. To see how easy the new version would be for general users, you should have had a few people who do not whip out pictures with the greatest of ease.

Not bitter, just wondering.

Not to take the words out of Matthew’s mouth but we (the testers) were aware of who most of the other testers were (but not all) and I can say we haven’t yet seen posts from everyone. I was kind of wondering the same though. Where are those pics guys? Come on out!!! Olly olly oxen free…

oooh the tease!! I can hardly sleep now just waiting!!!

How about someone posting a rerender of an existing document side by side with soft shadows or radiosity. Something I haven’t seen yet. That would be more useful than seeing the same new modelling tool. Especially as no one can say anything about the modelling tool anyway. OK it’s a cool tool, we knew that when we saw the tree people.

Thanks, Lonnie. I couldn’t help but wonder. Nothing personal, of course. And Hanuman has a good suggestion. This is something I’ve been waiting to see as well, a side by side.

I realized a question I wanted to ask.

Does 1.5 allow a higher ppi than 72 on export? Any other file formats now available?

And I too, would like to see a side by side comparison of a 1.23b vs that same file in 1.5. (with render time comparison)

How about some simple radiosity renders against native materials side by side with 1.23b? (with render time comparison)

I’m enjoying the creatures, too. But if this is Beta testing, let’s do some Beta tests.

 :+1:

Well about the only thing I can say (maybe Matthew can elaborate) is that as far as your requests go Kathy and Han not all of that is possible right now with the beta. Remember Matthew said not all of the tools/functions in 1.5 were implemented in the beta. The renderings that I did are identical to what I would do in 1.23b. There is only one small finite adjustment done in the beta (that I can’t go into) that is any different. My renderings are a trick of light and fog. I used a dark fog to make them look faded and more 3d. I also tweaked the lighting and used ADJUSTMENTS in the render menu. So to answer your question in a more direct route…I know I can’t do any comparitive stuff that you asked for. But you can get very very close to the same rendering results (that I did with my beta images) in 1.23b. I am looking forward to the new rendering engine as well and will be re-rendering these images once it is available.

Mentat7, So your saying all the beta pics you posted have NOT been rendered with the new version? Awesome pics pal… Awesome…

No Neoz…they were in fact rendered in the beta but they do not take advantage of any render enhancements. Here is the AH’HM-BROSIIM rendered in 1.23b The effect is in the technique not the software. If anyone is interested I can show you how to accomplish this in 1.23. We’ll start a new thread for it though.

Ah! Thanks Mentat. Your talent is so strong, you make it look like a real upgrade!

Obviously though, you are using the Zsphere, right? Or are you just having access to the new UI? Which by the way is an awesome improvement, so much less wasted real estate!

Can’t comment on all of that Kat but yes the ZSphere was used exclusively to create the bodies of my figures. It makes such work a real breeze! All other objects were created with traditional methods/tools.

Well, don’t look at me. I wasn’t one of them.

A little post with a number of new features used. A ,ot of post work was done to this ugly guy.

BTW…Mentat…I am SO impressed by your latest work. Are you going to share your light and render settings??? PLEASE!!!

JUST BRING IT!

Same theory. different mesh.
