Vector Displacement / 3DS Max 2012 / VRay 2.2.03

Any VRay peeps care to share how to get this working?

Never used displacement before just high res meshes but would like to use vector displacement.

I ran the Create Diagnostic Files.

And pretty much stuck there!

Do I use VRayDisplacementMod or Vector Displacement somewhere in the shader?

Thanks in advance

I thought I had it this morning til Vlado over at Chaos groups informed me this method produced regular displacement. I did send him a file to play around with so maybe there will be some info on their forums soon.

I guess we should make this the official thread for this topic.

my post here:

I’m still struggling too, here’s a tutorial for mudbox + maya + vray vector displacement that could offer some clues: http://www.spot3d.com/vray/help/maya/150R1/tutorials_vector_displacement.htm

Thanks Todd and Greg,

Sorry Todd, I hadn’t seen your post in that thread.

I normally stick with decimated meshes but thought it looked like a cool feature.

Will have a play around tomorrow as I have a day off!

I was struggling with this the other day and eventually gave up in frustration after trying tons of combinations. Don’t know why it’s such a struggle. Using vector displacement from 3D Coat is a breeze by comparison. Hopefully Vlado or someone here smarter than me can figure out this problem.

ya, I contacted vlado and he’s going to look into getting vector displacements working with V-ray for Maya. I can’t get it working either.

same here. I’ve been trying with 3ds max 2012 and vray and its just a mess. I’ve been using the vray displacement mod with the 3d displacement and vector displacement on but it just looks like everything has exploded.
I hope someone figures this out coz i’m at a loss here.

Well I can get it to do a straight up and down displacement using a tangent 32-bit map on my own mesh (-2.0 for amount, 2d mapping) but nothing like what we’re supposed to be seeing.

Posted by Vlado: “I wish those guys would settle on a standard way of doing this stuff, beats me why everything has to be slightly different.”

Made me laugh because I often think that too. This is all reminding of the day ZBrush 2.0 came out, when it was all about the amazing new greyscale displacement map technology. Had a heck of a time getting half decent displacements back then too lol.

haha - ya, it’s sad and unsurprising that they make 900 different vector displacement map setting combinations but none of them work with one of the most common renderers: V-Ray. I love ZBrush but they really need to reign in the needlessly complicated non-compliant options. We’re still flipping UV maps, for god’s sake.

Honestly its been a while now and there hasn’t been any progress on either end…that is disappointing. I think adding a feature that a certain percentage of users can’t use is furstrating to the community. Ok so Vlado from Chaos group has some work to do as does Pixo, but we were all excited for this new feature, and now it is nothing more than a buzzword on the featurelist for those who are unable to use it. I do hold issue with that fact that threads like these are not generally addressed and fade away without a valid answer or solution. I am not Pixo bashing, but I think that if anything developers should open a dialogue with each other IE Pixo and Chaos group to help move things along. I havent had time to test the feature since the days following the release, but I never expected months later to come back to this thread and see no progress made, and no input from anyone at Pixo.
This is a great product, and I do enjoy using it, in all fairness though some effort to address the issues or even a message that says"we are working on it but it may take a while" would be welcomed. If someone has gotten it to work, how about some production focused videos in the Classroom section that deal with technical side of things. There are some great vids there, but lets admit that some features can be tricky when moving between packages, and have someone post some pipeline/workflow tutorials in the classroom.

Yes - big disappointment that there’s currently zero functionality for Zbrush’s vector maps in V-ray. Maybe it’s a scale issue. I notice things can get really wild with the sizes when you import/export/GOZ depending on where you started your modelling… Pixologic is amazing, but it would be great if they could look into how well Zbrush syncs with other packages. After all, the lion part of the Zbrush user base uses the program in conjunction with other programs as I understand.

this is exactly what I am talking about…a month later and no response from pixo.

Has anyone made any progress with vector maps/3ds/vray yet?

vector displacement from zbrush doesnt work with vray ( maya and max ) this is Vlado’s response from a few weeks ago. apperently theres a fix in progress.
