Van Logan Franklin- Works

Lovely work, I particularly like your anatomy knowledge, great creature designs, cheers :+1:

Thank you Bangers!
Here is another update

really cool! I like it a lot!

So I got my demon 3D printed. Here are the results after some minor sanding. This is about 8 inches tall and was printed through shapeways in the frosted detail plastic. The print has been sanded very lightly with 600 grit and spray primed. 3zDjqIG.jpg

I Love this

I made a few time lapse videos of the mold making process.

Here is the finished resin cast. I have more photos here and I will also be selling a limited number of them. https://squareup.com/market/van-logan-franklin/nightmareIMG_7290.JPG

I’m working on a collaborative piece with a blacksmith friend of mine. I’m designing a few torc heads and he is going to cast them in bronze and and make the twisted wire for the torc.

While I’m waiting for things back from the printer I started working on a life-size forearm and hand anatomy study. Its still rough now but I’d figure I would give you guys a peek at what I am up to. IMG_7381.JPGIMG_7382.JPGIMG_7384.JPGIMG_7387.JPG

I just got my torc heads back from the printer today. torc.jpg

Very nice! Is that a powder-based SLS output? Is the dark color native to the material? And does the model you are holding reflect any post processing by your, or is that as it came out of the printer? We are working thru a number of tests on SLS and SLA machines – love the Objet, but have had some nice stuff done in the powders, too…

Thank you rcgauer. It was printed in the frosted detail plastic from Shapeways. https://www.shapeways.com/materials/frosted-detail-plastic The material was translucent white when I received it. I have not yet done any sanding, I have applied a very thin coat of primer so the form is easier to see.

Have you tried the Cubify Accutough?
http://cubify.com/en/Print/Acutough

Gives really good detail and has a bigger build volume … although we’re trying just about everything we can to get a feel for the level of detail preserved… Here’s part of our growing mammoth herd:

Trying to put together the money for an Objet… but you can buy a lot of service bureau work for $25K.

I haven’t tried Cubify. I would love to see some detail photos of your mammoths to get an idea of the surface.

We’ve abandoned the mammoth tests for a while, because the tusks created too many variables between those processes that require support material – SLA, FDM, Objet – and those that don’t. We wanted an apples-to-apples comparison of a range of texture depths and types.

We created a standardized set of textures in an 8 x 8-inch grid, and had them done on each of the major technologies. Thus far, the really good SLA and polyjet/Objet systems are the top tier, but only a little bit over the SLS Accutough. The other SLS systems are good, but the powdery residue and slightly pebbled texture are objectionable at the sizes we are working on now. Probably would not be at some other sizes… and we’ve had some OK success using airbrush-based fillers and primers over the SLS, although at the expense of some texture. Anyway, the goal is to find the combination of model texture and output fidelity that works. We are going to be doing resin, cold-cast and traditional bronzes from these, so a range of materials and costs will probably be OK… Our typical target footprint is “toaster sized”… so 10 x 10 x 8" systems are what we are focusing on mostly. The FormLabs form1+ is good, but at the lower end of what we need in a build size.

Here’s the test chip:

It’s 8 x 8. It is pretty useless when printed on low-end FDM units, marginal to adequate on higher-end FDMs like Mojo and the Fortus series, pretty good on SLS systems and very good on SLA/photo resins… On a price basis, the Accutough SLS is significantly less expensive than any of the SLA options and we can probably dial in the textures. We’re working now with post processing, seeing what chemistries work best for priming and painting.

Here’s a mammoth (without tusks or ears – failed print on a Form1+) getting primed, and you can see a little texture… but it is hard to get a good photo…

Which side is currently down in your printing process?

Depends on the media… the mammoths were done in a variety of orientations, and we eventually disconnected the tusks. The texture test file is typically done off of horizontal, although with Objet it was printed absolutely flat… All input and ideas welcome…

Just received this in Cubify clear: Outstanding detail, but pricey. The camera flash is a little weird; this is just a quickie photo…
