UVmapping Question (Maya to Z)

As a Maya user and one who normally takes a UV snapshot into PS for my texture work i take a lot of time to lay out my UV’s.

My question is if there is a need to lay UV’s out carefully or just auto map them before taking into Z brush? I understand that could depend on what the model is being used for, but if i am doing just a still piece is there any reason not to just automap?

Thanks,
Doug

Yes, ZBrush offers the AUV and GUV auto-UV algorithms, but I still always layout my UVs manually for a few reasons:

  • Less seams to potentially cause problems

  • Texture maps are more presentable, as they are human-readable

  • Gives me the option of making quick paint edits in Photoshop without having to go through ZBrush.
