UV problem from 3DS Max to Zbrush 4

Hi all

I hope someone can help, I’m a bit of noob with Zbrush so perhaps there is an easy solution.

After unwrapping my model in 3DS Max I went into Zbrush 4 using GoZ, then modelled etc, then exported the normals. I found that at this point that my unwrapping wasn’t sufficient and could do with refining in places. I would like to keep the sculpting I have done in Zbrush but I need to replace the UV’s with another UV map from Max.

How can I do this?.. I tried to go back to Max using GoZ and then applying another UV map, then going back to Zbrush but the new UV’s conflict with the model and give me some odd distortions

errmmm… can anyone help?

If I haven’t explained my problem well enough please ask, if I don’t find a solution it means doing all my sculpting again in Zbrush.

Here’s a thread I started a while back that covers some Max/ZBrush Uv issues:

In short, in zbrush, make sure you always have MRG checked for both imports and exports.

Near the bottom of the thread above, I put in another link that describes a great method using uv map> cycle UV’s

I hope this helps

Hi, thanks for the reply, I’ve been using GoZ to import from Max, where can I find the MRG option or is that just when you import manually?

I don’t know how to set it as a preference for GoZ (please post if you figure that out), but if you load a tool in ZBrush (or draw a primitive onto the screen and hit “make polymesh 3D”) you’ll see the Import tab near the bottom of the tool menu, just above the Export tab. Part of the problem, perhaps the whole problem, is that in tool>import MRG is not selected by default. (As of ZB 4 MRG is selected by default in tool>export, but still not in tool>import).

In the future, before you use GoZ to export your tool from ZBrush to Max, make sure MRG is selected in the import tab. That way, when you import it back from Max you should be all set. In the present situation, try opening your original tool in ZB (the one you made before exorting top Max), set tool>import to MRG, then try using GoZ from Max. You could also to fix the messed up UV’s with the cycle UV’s button.
