UV Painting Using Photo Reference

Hello guys~!

I totally shock by the awesomeness of the new UV Master, been playing around with it and easily achieve a nice UV map in just a few seconds

And what I wanna ask here is, how do I transfer the texture from a photo to the mesh, cus currently I’m doing a project which require me to model a low poly model (<1800 poly) and transfer real human photo to the mesh.

Ok currently what I’m doing so far are:

  1. model in Lightwave
  2. import .obj into ZBrush
  3. generate UV map
  4. create a 2048 texture

What I have in mind before was using ZProject brush to transfer the photo, but it looks like when I do that, it polypaint the mesh instead of applying it to the texture, which giving me a super-ugly-lowrez polypaint (cus remember I only have <900 poly in the head)

So please guys if you have any solution for this it will pretty much appreciated.

you’ll need to subD your model before you use project. If you need to keep the exact form you have on the LP just turn off SMT before you divide and you should be all set.

Wow thanks for the quick reply~!

But isn’t it 2 different things between polypaint and texture paint?..I thought we can have great texture detail even on lowrez mesh if we apply a high rez texture to it, no?..

Yea I have to keep the exact form, cus I cant subdivde it since it will be too heavy for the final product later on. I’m using Lightwave, so I can turn on smoothing on the surface to blend the polygon visually (similar to Smooth modifier in Max), but in ZBrush we don’t have any option on smoothing other than divide the mesh resulting x4 poly counts.

Well thanks goast666, atleast it will lead me to the correct path for now…will try what you suggest here, hope it work as I expecter…

I believe to do what you’re trying to do you have to use projection master or Zapplink.

I just realize that ZProject brush in 3.5R3 behave quite different than 3.1…

Cus when I load the image and put my mesh infront of it, there’s no need for me to use the ā€œtranspose lineā€ to do the sampling from the image (like pressing alt when using clone tool in photoshop) instead jus place the mesh ontop of the image and paint straight away! it will transfer the detail from the photo right under the mesh onto the mesh!..

Or isit really behave like that in 3.1? lol…haven’t do much play around with ZProject brush back in 3.1…

But goast666, you were right…by subD my mesh and turn off [Smt] solve my problem with the polypaint which later on can transfer to the high rez texture…Im thinking also about [Projection Master] but we can’t use ZProject brush while in 2.5D mode right?..
