UV maps

I am a jeweler and have started including Zbrush in my everyday work flow. I do award rings or class rings generally. My question is, when I bring my surfaces in from my cad program. I go through the whole triangle to quad conversion. However the surfaces I am working with are under .5 mm thick generally. When I unwrap my surfaces to obtain the uv map, the edges are lost in translation. Is there a way of flattening a surface without having to unwrap the surface to better control the placement of details. For example the lettering around the top of a class ring, I could easily create the text in my vector program and place it over the uv map and export as an alpha, however the precison is not there. If I could simply paint uvs on one side of the face controlling the target areas that would be great. I have read about normal maps. Sounds right, when you think of normal to the surface, but I do not think I can flatten these. Any suggestions on this?
