UV mapping-what am i DOING WRONG

This my first model. It’s a lambchop. I was getting to a point where I was going to obj it out and see if it loaded with a UV texture in C4D and Maya, but I ran into some problems trying to create the UV map. The file linked is a version I did with color & textures but I can’t get into the UV checker let alone the Displacement map button to come up at all. (all greyed out). I tried a previous version that when I hit Make Polygon Mesh seems to open the uV controls but then creates a whole new set of problems, the first is that my subdivisions go away. I made the model clean, I think, using a low subdivision which I unserstand is the base of my UV. I think I’m close to getting it but I fear I missed a step or domething earlier in the modeling. Any ideas? I’m pretty lost. Thanks in advance.
Sorry about the large file I had to link via a file share link…

First off, probably no one will download your files…too much work, and I don’t really like downloading a .zip from someone I don’t know.

Did you have UV’s on your mesh when you started to model it? if so, make sure, enable UV’s is turned on

tool>texture>enableUV

That should give you access to the UVcheck or col>txt buttons.

If you did not have UV’s, then you have to import them into Zbrush. (it doesn’t magically know that you changed the UV’s in another program).

As long as you didn’t change the vertex order than you will be all set.
go to subD 1
tool>morphtarget>store MT
tool>import>browse to the new OBJ with UV’s
tool>morphtarget>switch
go up your subD’s to make sure it doesn’t explode.
tool>morphtarget>delete

now your new UV’s are on your mesh. see above if things are still grayed out.

Sorry if I sound like a prick right now, it’s late and I’m getting mad at Camtasia

Thanks. I don’t blame you, the file is big. Your post gives me some options to try. Only a couple questions. I need to create UVs so I export my full level 7 model as an obj to some program like C4D, Maya, or some unknown UV specific program right? Then assign UVs and import UVs back as obj into Zbrush? Finally start coloring away. Is that corect? Or is importing a uv something different? I’m confused about that.

you want to export out a low level subD, unless you’d like to try to unwrap millions of polygons

thanks

Hey quincyhall - big file there, alright :smiley:

Enable Texture UVs in ten simple steps:

1./ Topology–> Delete Topology;
2./ Tools --> Adaptive Skin ‘Make’
3./ Tools --> Make ‘PolyMesh3D’
4./ Reselect ‘Painted_Meat_3’ ZTL (in the Tools Palette)
5./ Go back down to your the lowest Subdiv Level
6./ Texture Palette -->Texture New (2048x2048 I used)
7./ Texture Palette --> GUV Tiles
8./ Geometry --> Back up to Subdiv Level 8
9./ Texture --> Enable UVs
10./ Texture --> Col --> Tex

Done!

Hope it helps :slight_smile:

Thanks for that…Super clear.

No problem - Glad it worked out :slight_smile:

Steel gate valve is excellent for use anywhere a shutoff valve is needed. Steel gate valve can also be used where throttling capabilities are desired, although this is not generally recommended as erosion of the seat and disc occurs due to the vibrations of the disk in throttling applications…from the site www.ulovalve.net/gate-valve.htm
