I am trying to figure out why UV groups will not work on my imported mesh.
There are uv.s that i created, but i cannot seem to get zbrush to see them.
what are some things i can check for?

Try using autogroup. Sometimes that works better than uvgroups…for me anyways.
UV Groups requires that each group be in a different UV region. In other words, one group should be region 0,0 to 1,1. Another region could be 1,0 to 2,1. Just being in different parts of the same map is not enough – they have to be entirely different maps in UV space. If all of the UV’s are on the same map, then the result will be what you show with the entire model being put into one group.

It seems i am not understanding how to move the different shells into the proper UV location.
I have seen UV maping tutorials, but have yet to find one that explains clearly how to move the different UV shells.
Any links , or DVD’s that offer this type of info?

Actually, all of your mapping is located in the 0,0 to 1,1 UV space. That’s why it’s not working. Here is an example of the kind of layout that you need.
