Using ZBrush for Sketching

I’ve seen ZBrush used as a sketching tool quite sometime ago but didn’t take fancy to start using it. However, for the last 7 days, I decided to utilize ZBrush as a mean to practice draw. Each drawing took about 15 minutes to complete. This has become a normal process when I start ZBrush apps, as it does help me loosen my wrist and allows me to ge back to the Wacom tablet habit. And I found out ZBrush is such an amazing tool in this regard.

Also when I tried out this method for the first time, I did record the script and think it’s quite cool how ZBrush can replay that. Let me knwo what do you think about this. C&C are welcome.

really nice skeches. Thats way zbrush is unique because it’s possibilities are endless.

That’s right…couple weeks before I would never used ZB for this kind of work but it’s quite fun sketchign in it.

I also used this technique for doing sketches prior to my modeling in 3D Like in this case is a sketch of Failed Guyver before take over to clean up in Photoshop then onto Silo then back to ZBrush for detailing. ZB is such an amazing tool. Can’t fall in love enough with ZBrush :).

great sketches and latest model.
bravo!!!

:sunglasses: Awesome sketches and model… :+1: Thumbs up

Did you create that base mesh in another app… or did you edge loop it in Z-Brush ?

That is some killer work. Personally, I like the sketches better, but I think that’s just cause I used to draw before I got into 3d. I think the designs on the drawings look great too, comic bookish, but in a stylized realistic way, NOT the wanna-be anime way (I’m really getting tired of all that wanna-be manga stuff anyway). I especially like the creature on the Upper right, and the dude with the bulb in his head on the lower left. Very cool

I’ve tried drawing with my crappy tablet (made by a now defunct company called KBGear), but I never got the hang of it. I’m not sure if it’s me, or my tablet, though.

Awesome sketches and concepts, the detailed head looks great too.
Keep it up:+1:

…this Glen Southern script ?
Zbrush pencil case
Pilou

Thank you all very much for the kind comments.

pixelsoul, The model (failed guyver) was created from ZSpheres initially then I did some topology changes in Silo. After I have the base defined, I exported back (as .obj) to ZBrush for further refinements.

ReplicA, I highly recommend Wacom as a tablet to use with ZBrush as it’s very reliable (even the smaller Graphire one) and also has great driver support across multiple platforms.

And, Frenchy Pilou, the Zbrush pencil case is very awesome and cool, I ought to try this as well

I’ll have morei mages posted as time goes by.

Yeah, I’m sure a Wacom is better. In fact I knew that when I bought my tablet, but mine was only $25. Now I know why.

Looking forward to more stuff being posted, this is really cool work.

Replica, your site is quite cool and your models are excellent also. Would it be possible to post some of your images onto my personal site (Thai site for ZBrush users). As I’m building the small Thai ZBrush community, I found out that have viewing great models from good artists can be real inspiration. Let me know if that 'd be possible

Thanks, SolidSnakexxx, I’m glad you liked my site. In order to try and keep this thread on topic, and keep your art at the forefront ot it, I’ll send you a PM about the site.

Excellent, thank you ReplicA. Much appriciated.

Just another note. I’m lucky enough to be invited to show ZBrush 2D and 2.5D capability in an upcoming “Creative World 2005” event held in Thailand (Thai Creative community) I’ll be covering the 2D and its amazing 2.5D aspects as well as the basic ZBrushing (From ZSphere creation , to displacment creation for high detail on low poly, etc) to Thais as well. I hope they will find ZB’s ability amazing and eye popping as I did when I first discovered it (^.^). Hail, ZB!!!

Just wondering: do you notice a performance gain in sketching with Zbrush as compaired to Photoshop. I use Photoshop for sketching but only because thats where I started. But it has always had latency issues.

As a matter of fact, bpmufx, I do not experience any slow down when I use zBrush for sketching. It’s very fast and responsive

very stimulating sketches, nicely done. I like the fact that they go beyond the manga influence and actually represent some REAL artistic fundamentals. The model is bad ass also.
