Using a Normal Map from a High Res Model on a Low Res Version

Hi there!
I’m currently working on texturing a full-body character model and I’m exploring the different methods of doing it before I settle on one. This is my first ever character and I am very unfamiliar with texturing techniques. While speaking to a friend doing the same project he said he was told by a teacher to “use the normal map from the high res model on the low res version”.
Just wondering if anyone could either explain how this is done or point me in the direction of a good tutorial? And what’s a Normal Map (in Layman’s terms)?
I made my character and did the retopology in ZBrush so if I can I’d like to use ZBrush for the whole project. I have been trying to use UV mapping in 3DS Max in conjunction with Photoshop but it is time consuming and the textures look different in 3DS Max than in Photoshop. I tried using UV Master in ZBrush but, well, here’s the result:
